Wato - Wheelchair and Tourism

Wato brings together wheelchair users and tourism specialists.
One of our main targets is to make the market for wheelchair-friendly vacations more transparent. On the one hand we present a wide range of holiday apartments and homes as well as hotels which are all suitable for wheelchair users in the heading “wheelchair-accommodations”; furthermore, we provide a lot of useful information on how to go on vacation with the wheelchair in the heading “wheelchair holidays”. On the other hand we give tourism experts the opportunity to present their offers within a standardised framework.

For those who depend on appropriate accommodations or special services due to their handicaps it is extremely relevant to know, if the selected holiday home or hotel really deliver what it promises – possibly before the booking is done.

Unfortunately until to date no kind of standard for the classification of wheelchair suitable accommodations or holiday offers has been established. As far as Germany is concerned, the situation is a bit better due to the work of DEHOGA (the German hotels and restaurants association) and various other associations, however there is no classification in sight either. Same goes for other countries.

Another intention of wato.de is to increase the transparency with international offers and their presentation. Our aim is to make national and international offers for wheelchair suitable vacations comparable. Wheelchair users planning a trip should be able to recognize straight away, if an accommodation or any other touristy offer is wheelchair-friendly and really suitable for them or not.
Of course you may have to place some further and individual requests in many cases to guarantee that your very specific needs and demands will be met, however this kind of a pre-selection shall ease things a lot.

When going to the heading “wheelchair and tourism” you will find bits and pieces of information regarding events, projects and actions of the various tourism associations and companies. Here the focus of course does lie on holidays for wheelchair users as well, however other offers for barrier-free travel are being taken into account as well.
The section „Wheelchair and tourism“ accumulates information concerning the segment of barrier-free travel. Here we inform you about our project's progress as well as about projects of others. Evaluations of our questionnaires will be presented in this section as well.
