Archaeological traces, a historically significant house and church art give Langenenslingen a range of cultural points of interest. The Old Castle above Warmtal turns the spotlight on the Celtic period; at the Jünger House, preserved living and working spaces take centre stage. Churches in Dürrenwaldstetten and Langenenslingen add to the picture with narrative paintings and architectural history. When planning your trip, you can decide which discoveries to focus on based on these themes.

The Old Castle above Warmtal

The Old Castle is a site of about two hectares, with terraces and large walls built by people. Archaeologists from the State Office for the Preservation of Monuments clearly date it to the Celtic period. The terraces and walls shape the site; its archaeological classification gives it a clear historical connection.

From the hiking car park, you can reach the Old Castle via a signposted footpath. Driving in the forest is strictly prohibited. Please follow the signs on site.

The Stauffenberg Forest House and the Jünger House

The Stauffenberg Forest House is a Baroque building dating from 1728. Ernst Jünger lived there from 1951 until his death in 1998. Here, the history of Baroque architecture and the life story of the writer meet in one place.

At the Jünger House, you can visit Ernst Jünger's living and working spaces, preserved in their original condition, including his library and beetle collection. The garden belonging to the house is also open to visitors. Another room is dedicated to his brother Friedrich Georg Jünger (1898–1977). The preserved rooms and collections offer different insights into the house; the dedicated room adds a glimpse of the family's history. Check current visiting hours before your visit.

Church art and architectural history

In St. James's Church in Dürrenwaldstetten, three large ceiling paintings by Januarius Zick tell the Christmas story. The paintings connect a place of worship with a specific narrative subject. The present-day parish church of St. Conrad on the main road by the castle in Langenenslingen was built in the style of 1890. Together, the two churches offer contrasting points of interest: the Christmas story depicted in one, and the architectural history of the parish church in the other.

More themes in the wider Biberach destination

The wider Biberach destination has more cultural and landscape-related themes to explore. The Upper Swabian Museum Village of Kürnbach presents six centuries of history. More than 30 historic buildings offer insights into everyday life in times past. In Laupheim, the Museum of the History of Christians and Jews explores three centuries of shared life among Christian and Jewish residents. These themes offer a different focus from the archaeological site and living spaces in Langenenslingen.

Architecture and the history of routes are also represented: Steinhausen Pilgrimage Church was built between 1728 and 1731 by Dominikus Zimmermann and his brother Johann Baptist Zimmermann. Steinhausen lies on the Way of St. James, which leads from Nuremberg via Nördlingen, Ulm and Biberach onwards to Bad Waldsee, Weingarten, Einsiedeln and Le Puy, and then to Santiago in Spain. At Schussenried Abbey, the magnificent library hall in the Baroque convent building is among the most beautiful library halls in southern Germany. For a different theme, the freely accessible Wackelwald is close to the spa park on the outskirts of Bad Buchau. The planetarium presents multimedia shows about astronomy and space travel, changing quarterly.

Start with this choice of themes and tailor your search accordingly.
