Dätzingen combines a narrow Muschelkalk valley with distinctive themes for a trip: castle architecture, local history and insights into rural life in the past. The Catholic Church of St. Leonhard and the local history museum complement a visit to Dätzingen Castle. Culture and the village’s distinctive location on the Altbach thus sit side by side—two different ways to get to know the place.

Dätzingen Castle: Architecture and Building History

Dätzingen Castle is a four-winged building with an enclosed courtyard and originated as a former house of the Johanniter Order. In the wider destination of Grafenau, the history of this origin stretches far back: the house is mentioned as early as 1263. The four wings enclose the courtyard as a unified complex; the enclosed form draws attention to the building as a whole.

The Malta Hall contains historical views of Valletta. The staircase and the Neoclassical columned entrance porch are based on plans by N. F. von Thouret from 1812. The Catholic Church of St. Leonhard was also built in 1812; it was redesigned in 1954. The year 1812 thus features in two different contexts: the construction of the church and the plans for parts of the castle. The church’s redesign marks a later stage in its building history.

The castle also has a walled garden, created in keeping with garden plans that were never carried out. Here, the completed castle complex and unrealized plans stand side by side as different chapters in the same building history.

Local History Museum and the History of the Village

The Grafenau Local History Museum in Dätzingen Castle offers insights into rural life in the past through its collections on farming, household economy and village crafts. Its historical section also covers the development of the former districts of Dätzingen and Döffingen. Local history thus complements the themes of everyday life with a look at the development of both former districts.

In the wider destination of Grafenau, audio guides are available at the local history museum in Dätzingen Castle. They explain the exhibits in detail and accompany visitors on a self-guided tour. The Grafenau Local History Museum is listed as being open on the third Sunday of the month from 2 to 5 p.m. Check whether these hours are current before visiting.

Concerts, Exhibitions and Christmas Market

Castle concerts and art exhibitions in the castle cellar are held regularly. Concerts and other events also take place in the Malta Hall. The Grafenau Cultural Association is known for the Dätzingen Castle concerts, held in the castle’s atmospheric setting. If you would like to include a concert or exhibition in your travel plans, check the specific dates in advance.

The Grafenau Christmas Market takes place around Dätzingen Castle. The program includes, among other things, tours of the castle and local history museum, Christmas music, and singing Christmas carols together in the castle courtyard. These different activities combine insights into the castle’s history with music and communal singing. Check the dates and specific program for the relevant year.

Dätzingen in the Altbach Valley

Dätzingen stretches through the narrow Muschelkalk valley of the Altbach, near its confluence with the Würm and at the foot of Hackstberg. This location complements the history of the castle buildings and museum with a clear connection to the landscape. For those choosing a destination with the landscape in mind as well as culture, the valley, stream and slope provide another point of reference.
