Kuppingen can be explored through a variety of themes: architectural history, trails through the landscape and a long-standing festival tradition. The churches tell stories of different periods of construction, while the trails offer their own perspectives on the town and its surroundings. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether you are most interested in historical details, the landscape or local events.

Churches and artistic heritage

The cultural heritage site at Knappengasse 21 is a Protestant parish church. It was built around 1300 and remodelled in 1480 and 1961; the churchyard wall is part of the site. Another landmark in Kuppingen’s church history is St. Antonius Church. Martin Schilling and his son Hans, both architects from Rottenburg am Neckar, built it in 1958. When the interior was redesigned in 1989, the former altarpiece was replaced by a monumental mosaic by Otto Habel of Leinfelden. Together, the two churches reflect different periods of construction and distinct artistic touches.

Trails through Kuppingen and the surrounding landscape

The Kuppinger Weg runs along the southern edge of the village and passes through a dry valley known locally as “Schneckennudel.” The panoramic trail along the Kuppinger Weg offers views of the Schönbuch, the Ammertal valley and the Swabian Alb. The village setting, dry valley and distant views each offer a different focus: you can take in the nearby landscape or let your gaze wander farther across the regions mentioned.

The cycling route “Hedgerows and Medieval Walls” offers a different perspective. It runs across Kuppingen, through fields and onward to the forest. The Kuppingen Erlebnisweg can be reached by car; parking is available at the cemetery in Kuppingen, right at the trail’s main starting point. This provides information for finding both a cycling route through the village and fields and access to the Erlebnisweg’s main starting point.

Festival tradition and barbecue hut

Since 1976, the onion tart festival has been a fixture on Kuppingen’s events calendar. Homemade onion tart is served at the festival, which also features a music programme. If the festival is a deciding factor in your travel plans, check the specific event dates in advance.

The Kuppingen barbecue hut can accommodate around 40 people indoors and also has an outdoor barbecue area. As capacity may change, it is advisable to confirm the current information before making specific plans.

Culture in the wider destination of Herrenberg

In the wider destination of Herrenberg, the collegiate church offers its own historical highlights. It was built in two phases: from 1276 to 1293 and from 1471 to 1493. It was completed as the first Gothic hall church in WĂĽrttemberg. The collegiate church houses choir stalls created by Heinrich Schickhardt in 1517 and the oldest rose window in Swabia.

The Herrenberg Bell Museum is also housed in the collegiate church. Its large bell chamber contains more than 30 bells that can be rung and a 50-bell carillon; the collection spans nine centuries. Those interested in architectural history will also find the half-timbered house trail in Herrenberg’s old town, where 24 stops explain the history and construction of the houses.

The Jerg Ratgeb Sculpture Trail runs from the train station through the historic old town, past the collegiate church and up to Schlossberg hill. There are 25 works along the route to the Herrenberg Schlossberg observation tower. The tower stands on the stump of the former powder tower; from there, the view stretches to the Swabian Alb. The Herrenberg Municipal Gallery also presents contemporary painting, graphic art, photography and sculpture.

Herrenberg’s cultural life also includes the “Sommerfarben” festival, held every year in early July with numerous cultural groups from the town taking part, as well as classical concerts in the programmes of the music school and church musicians. The specific festival programme and dates may vary.
