Hausen an der Würm combines a historic village centre with buildings from various periods. The village’s streetscape brings together the Protestant St. Sylvester’s Church, with its medieval core, and numerous buildings dating from the 17th to the 19th century. The village centre lies on the western bank of the Würm.

Village History by the River

East of the historic village centre, the Würm Bridge crosses the river. The stone bridge has five arches and projecting sections at its piers. The stonemason J. Wielandt built it in 1777. Its clearly documented construction date and architectural details provide a tangible historical point of interest on a walk through the village.

Frohnmühle lies north of Hausen. The complex includes a mill building with three grinding runs and a polishing run, a residential building, the ruin of a cellar house and a bakehouse. It also includes a mill race and an arched bridge over the Würm. The mill buildings, watercourse and other parts of the ensemble come together here, offering a different perspective on local cultural heritage from the church and bridge in the village centre.

Explore the Land.Tour GrenzRäume on Foot

The official Land.Tour GrenzRäume is 5.73 kilometres long. The map shows a route from Hausen an der Würm to Münklingen. The route is listed as having around 134 metres of ascent and descent and a walking time of about an hour and a half. This makes it easy to distinguish the time needed for the hike from a visit focused mainly on the village centre and its architectural history.

The route runs mostly along paved farm and forest tracks. Around two kilometres follow woodland paths with exposed roots; sure-footedness is required in some places. The route is not suitable for pushchairs. Trail conditions can change depending on the season or maintenance work; route information is also updated from time to time. More Trails and Culture in Weil der Stadt

Weil der Stadt offers another themed route: the Planet Trail. The Kepler Society created it with the town in spring 2012, following a scenic walking route in the northern Würm Valley. The trail is 10.1 kilometres long, with a walking time of about two hours and 45 minutes. It can also be explored by bicycle. Panels about the Sun and the inner rocky planets—Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars—are located within the town of Weil der Stadt.

The museums also cover a range of subjects. The Kepler Museum is housed in the birthplace of astronomer Johannes Kepler (1571–1630). Some of his major works, mostly in original editions, are on display; modern presentation techniques, computer simulations and video screenings explain scientific fundamentals. The Weil der Stadt City Museum presents the town’s history as an interactive chronicle spanning 15 rooms across three floors. The ground floor focuses on the political history of the Imperial City of Weil from the Middle Ages until the end of its status as an Imperial Free City in 1802.

The Carnival Museum explains why Weil der Stadt has been known as a carnival stronghold since the 17th century and how Swabian-Alemannic Fasnet merged there with Rhenish-Franconian carnival. Life-size figures illustrate the various groups of the Weiler Fasnet. This gives you a range of interests to consider for your trip: the architectural history and mill ensemble in Hausen, a hike with a clearly specified distance, or the diverse cultural offerings in Weil der Stadt.
