Discover Iselshausen
Accommodation in Iselshausen
Iselshausen combines a short themed circular trail with traces of local history. The stream nature trail draws attention to the Steinach and its floodplain; the church, mill, hillside cellars and industrial history introduce other themes. This lets you weigh up nature experiences and historical discoveries as different focal points for your stay.
Stream Nature Trail and Steinach Landscape
The Iselshausen Stream Nature Trail is an easy, 0.66-kilometre themed circular route. It passes through a landscape conservation area. Within the trail area, the Steinach’s unaltered, meandering stream courses and the associated floodplain are rare. This combination of watercourse and floodplain defines the route’s natural focus and gives it a different emphasis from local history.
The trail lies directly on the long-distance Heidelberg–Black Forest–Lake Constance cycle route. When it was created in 2011, a section of the old mill channel at the Steinach was reactivated. This also makes the waterway’s historical context part of the trail. If you plan to walk the route, check current trail information and the rules in force in the landscape conservation area before your visit; trail conditions can change.
Church, Tree Trail and Local History
St. James’s Parish Church in Iselshausen was originally a subsidiary church of Nagold. St. James’s Church is one of the places of worship of the Evangelical Church Congregation of Nagold. Behind the church, a station on the Nagold Tree Trail is located by a winter lime tree. The tree trail was relaunched in 2023 as a digital smartphone experience, allowing visitors to listen to stories about trees. Check before travelling whether the digital service is available.
The Chapel of St. James, first mentioned in 1395, is also part of the village’s history. It probably served as a stop for weary pilgrims. Merovingian-era slab graves are also associated with Iselshausen. Together, these traces offer insight into different periods without requiring you to limit your exploration to a single attraction.
The Upper Mill is a historic, listed residential building. The historical trail in Iselshausen leads to the village’s old hillside cellars. Some of the old cellars above the Upper Mill are largely preserved. Another chapter in the village’s history is the „Calwer Deckenfabrik“ factory in Iselshausen, founded by Johann Adam Sannwald in 1844.
