Discover Dischingen: Church, Museum and Trails
Accommodation in Dischingen
Dischingen brings together local history and trails in the Härtsfeld region. At St. John the Baptist Parish Church, you can discover its architectural history and a distinctive organ; the local history museum and picture gallery offer different glimpses into rural life in the past. Themed trails lead to the English Garden, while the Härtsfeldsee lake and the Härtsfeld Museum Railway are nearby in the surrounding area. The accommodation that suits your trip also depends on whether you want to focus on cultural sites, walks or activities by the water.
Church and rural history
St. John the Baptist Parish Church was built by Joseph Dossenberger the Younger, a pupil of Dominikus Zimmermann. Its organ dates from 1782 and was made by Joseph Höß; it is considered his only surviving playable instrument. The church thus brings together two distinct historical connections: its architectural history and an instrument associated with organ builder Höß. The church is open to visitors during the day. Check locally before your visit to confirm access.
The Dischingen Local History Museum presents rural life in the Härtsfeld region in the past through household objects used in farming and crafts. The Rural Picture Gallery at Ballmertshofen Castle offers a different perspective: since 1977, it has displayed around 400 pictures and framed sayings from farmhouses in the Härtsfeld region. This gives you two different perspectives on life in the area—everyday objects on the one hand, and pictures and sayings on the other.
Taxis Castle, also known as Trugenhofen Castle, is in Dischingen and comprises several buildings, including the Cavalier Building, Theatre Building, Chapel Building, Prince’s Building and Princely Building. The castle is not open to the public. The adjacent English Garden has well-maintained trails and several distinctive landscape features. If you take the Thurn & Taxis themed trail, it leads from the town centre for about 3 km to Taxis Castle and the English Garden; six information boards line the route.
Hiking trails, views and the lake
There are several specific destinations to consider when planning your route. The Dischingen–Iggenhausen–Härtsfeldsee circular trail leads to the southern shore of the lake. A kiosk with a terrace is open there and serves refreshments. By contrast, a bench along the Härtsfeldsee–English Garden–Castles and Palaces route offers panoramic views over Dischingen and the Egau Valley. The two stops are therefore different: one is by the lakeshore, while the other overlooks the town and valley.
In the surrounding area, the Härtsfeldsee is a recreation area. It covers 11.5 hectares and reaches a depth of up to four metres. Surfing and paddling are available there; there is also a multi-generational playground and a large sand and mud play area. Nature is another part of the lake’s appeal: it provides a habitat for fish and bird species, European crayfish, swans and beavers. Water-based activities and habitats for different animal species are two distinct aspects to consider when planning your outing.
Another nearby stop is the Härtsfeld Museum Railway. Its route runs for more than 5.6 km through the Egau Valley between Neresheim and Dischingen and ends at the Härtsfeldsee. Historic original vehicles and buildings have been restored; part of the route from Neresheim through the Egau Valley has been put back into service. The railway adds another way to shape your outing, while the trails and lake offer their own points of interest.
Choose accommodation to suit your travel plans
If camping fits your travel plans, the Karlsbrunnen campsite in Dischingen-Trugenhofen is one specific option. It can accommodate up to five groups. Facilities include barbecue areas, a playground, a pavilion, parking, a football pitch, and sanitary facilities with toilets and showers. These amenities give you specific details to consider when planning a stay at the campsite. For other accommodation preferences, consider which activities you want to focus on during your trip: visiting local attractions, walking in green spaces or taking trips to the Härtsfeldsee.
