Neckarmühlbach combines the history of its castle and mills with a hiking trail offering views of the Neckar loop. Guttenberg Castle stands high above the romantic Neckar Valley, surrounded by vineyards and extensive forests, in the Neckarmühlbach district of Haßmersheim. This gives you a clear choice when planning your trip: cultural history, birds of prey experiences or a hike you can plan in detail. You can give these highlights different priorities depending on what interests you most.

Guttenberg Castle: life as a knight and birds of prey

The castle museum at Guttenberg Castle features the award-winning exhibition “Life in a Knight’s Castle.” It explains why castles were built and how their inhabitants lived in centuries past. It therefore focuses both on the reasons for building castles and on the everyday lives of the people who lived in them.

The castle is also home to a wooden library, a 200-year-old herbarium comprising 93 volumes. The German Raptor Centre offers a different perspective: it is known for spectacular flight displays featuring eagles and vultures. Visitors can also see a bird of prey land on their own gloved hand. The castle’s attractions thus offer distinct experiences: the exhibition and herbarium explore history and collections, while the Raptor Centre focuses on birds of prey.

Hiking with views of the Neckar loop

The Guttenberg Trail is 6.7 kilometres long; allow about two hours of walking time. It passes a woodland adventure trail and the Eduardshütte viewpoint. From the Eduardshütte, you can enjoy views of the large Neckar loop between Neckarmühlbach and Haßmersheim, the former residence of the Teutonic Order’s Grand Master at Horneck Castle, and the wine-growing village of Gundelsheim. The trail’s length and approximate walking time help you plan how long to set aside; its views give the route a distinctive scenic focus.

The history of the mills and the castle chapel

A historical account from 2018 identifies the Maysack Mill in Neckarmühlbach as one of the five historic mills in the so-called Five Mills Valley. It has been documented in written records since 1357. The mill therefore offers a separate cultural and historical thread to explore alongside the castle when planning your trip.

The church in Neckarmühlbach is the community’s castle chapel. Visitors are invited to join religious or historical guided tours of the church. If you are interested in the religious or historical significance of the area, this offers another theme to explore alongside the mill and castle museum.
