Pfrungen between Moorland and Architectural History

Pfrungen lies on the edge of Pfrunger Ried, considered the second-largest moorland area in southwestern Germany. Another distinctive feature of the landscape is the view from the holiday village above the settlement: it extends across the vast Pfrunger Ried to the Swabian Alb and the Alpine range. This means the location on the edge of the moorland and the panorama from the holiday village offer two distinct points of interest for planning a trip.

Chapels and Church in Pfrungen

The Marienkapelle near Pfrungen is a village or local chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Its windows are designed in the Baroque style; a Neoclassical ceiling painting was discovered during restoration work. Remains of walls and a Romanesque window niche suggest that a chapel already stood here in the 11th century. The Marienkapelle has undergone extensive renovation. Its location is also specific: it is on the road from Pfrungen towards Pfullendorf, right at the turn-off for Illmensee.

The parish church of St. Sebastian in Pfrungen also reflects several phases of construction. It originally dates from the 11th century and was rebuilt in 1615; it is listed in the monument register as a special cultural monument. These dates mark different periods in the building’s history: its early origins and its later reconstruction.

Hiking and Cycling in the Wider Destination of Wilhelmsdorf

The wider destination of Wilhelmsdorf offers further opportunities for hikers. The Pfrunger-Burgweiler Ried can be explored independently along four hiking trails; the hike starts and ends at the nature conservation center in Wilhelmsdorf. The nature conservation center also offers guided hikes through the moorland. This makes exploring the trails independently and joining a guided hike two different options for planning a trip. For the guided option, you can ask the center about current packages.

Wilhelmsdorf is also an important stop on the Oberschwaben-Allgäu long-distance cycle route. In the wider destination, hiking in the moorland and a long-distance cycling route are two distinct ways to plan a trip. If cycling is your main focus, Wilhelmsdorf offers a specific route connection, while Pfrungen’s cultural sites offer a different travel focus.

The cultural sites in Wilhelmsdorf also form a distinct theme. St. Wendelins-Kapelle is located on the grounds of the Wilhelmsdorf Museum of Rural Crafts and Culture; in September 1993, it was blessed by Dean Heinz Leuze of the Catholic Deanery of Ravensburg. In Wilhelmsdorf, the prayer hall of the Evangelical Brethren congregation stands in the middle of the square Saalplatz. St. Antoniuskirche, inaugurated in Wilhelmsdorf in 1999, has modern murals.
