Villingendorf has an extensive network of hiking and walking trails, the Fitness and Generations Park, and its local Fasnet celebrations. On clear days, the heights of the Swabian Alb can be seen from the higher elevations of the municipal area.

Trails, cycle route and views of the Swabian Alb

The network of hiking and walking trails crosses the municipal areas of Villingendorf and Bösingen, including Herrenzimmern; various circular trails let you explore the area around the village. A section of the Neckar Valley Cycle Route also passes through Villingendorf’s municipal area. When planning your day, you can choose between different activities: circular hikes and walks on the one hand, or a section of the cycle route on the other.

On clear days, the heights of the Swabian Alb can be seen from the higher elevations of the municipal area. If you want to plan for this view, take the weather conditions into account.

Fitness and Generations Park

The Fitness and Generations Park in Villingendorf opened in 2024. It is next to the sports grounds and can be reached from Wiesenweg to the south or StadionstraĂźe to the north. Parking is available at the SchĂĽtzenhaus and the sports clubhouse. If the park is part of your visit, check local parking arrangements in advance.

A large part of the park is planted as a wildflower and herb meadow, intended to benefit bees and other insects in particular. The park’s name and its planted area are among the specific details that make this place distinctive.

Fasnet in Villingendorf

On Schmotziger Donnerstag, Fasnet in Villingendorf includes releasing the schoolchildren and kindergarten children, the children’s Fasnet celebration in the multipurpose hall, and the Peasants’ Revolt at the town hall, where the new Habermüäsler is collected. These are different parts of the local tradition, with events for children as well as the Peasants’ Revolt at the town hall.

The Fasnet Monday parade starts at the assembly point on the corner of Hauptstraße and Schellenwasen, continues to Mörikeweg, and then returns to the Gasthof Kreuz. The Habermüäsler dance takes place there. These events follow the usual annual schedule; timings may change.

In Rottweil: the history of salt and Roman times

In Rottweil, the Salinenmuseum Unteres Bohrhaus presents the production of evaporated salt in original buildings, with original equipment, a water wheel and two brine pumps. The museum also explains the history and significance of the former Royal Salt Works Wilhelmshall, described as Rottweil’s oldest industrial enterprise.

At the Dominikanermuseum, the “Roman Rottweil – Arae Flaviae” exhibition takes visitors through a day in Roman Rottweil on August 4, 186 AD: from the forum in the morning, through various public and private engagements, to a feast in the evening. Reconstructions and interactive areas complement the exhibition. Visitors of all ages can try on a Roman wool tunic and chain mail, handle the helmet or shield of a Roman soldier, and try the saddle of a Roman rider. Check before your visit which hands-on activities are currently available.

Along the Roman Trail in Rottweil’s old town, information panels describe important sites in the former Roman city.
