St. Sebastian's Chapel in Balgheim brings together several clearly dated chapters: a major renovation was followed by renewed interior painting and, later, the building's relocation. In the wider Tuttlingen travel destination, attractions range from juniper heaths and distinctive cliffs to cycling and hiking routes. When planning your trip, you can therefore distinguish between a local cultural landmark and various regional nature and activity interests.

St. Sebastian's Chapel: Paintings and Local History

In 1894, St. Sebastian's Chapel underwent a major renovation inside and out; its interior painting was created by the artist Martin from Munich. In 1907, the church painter Rauch from Saulgau renewed the interior painting. The two dates therefore refer to different work on the building and its painted decoration.

In 1988, the chapel was relocated with only minor alterations. Its furnishings, including figures by Kuolt, were preserved; originally, it stood on the B14. Its relocation and preserved furnishings are therefore part of its history, as is its painted decoration.

Discovering Landscapes in the Wider Tuttlingen Travel Destination

Tuttlingen district covers 734.4 square kilometres. Its area includes the southwestern foothills of the Swabian Alb, parts of the Baar region and the Young Danube valley. The northern part is home to juniper heaths and the region known as the “10 Thousanders,” with ten mountains over 1,000 metres high. Other scenic highlights include the Danube Gorge and the Höwenegg volcanic crater; white limestone cliffs rise above the Danube valley. These landscapes offer different points of orientation: heaths and mountains, as well as valleys, cliffs and crater formations.

The Danube Sinkhole does not look the same every day, either. Between Immendingen, Möhringen, Tuttlingen and Fridingen, the Danube sometimes carries a lot of water, is completely dry in some places or carries only a little water. This natural phenomenon therefore cannot be reduced to one unchanging view.

Hiking, Cycling and Regional Culture

To distinguish between similarly named places, it helps to be clear: the DonauWellen premium hiking trail “Donauversinkung” runs between Tuttlingen-Möhringen and Immendingen; the Danube Sinkhole refers to the changing river phenomenon. Check current trail conditions before setting out on a hike. For cycling tours, Mühlheim an der Donau lies directly on the International Danube Cycle Path. The route extends to the Danube's mouth at the Black Sea and can also be ridden in short stages. Mühlheim is also part of the Upper Danube Nature Park.

The Neuhausen ob Eck Open-Air Museum offers another way to explore building history: it features 25 historic buildings that were dismantled at their original locations, relocated there and restored to their original condition. Thus, alongside the history of a single relocated building in Balgheim, the wider regional travel destination also offers a collection of historic buildings.

If you are including climbing in your travel plans, the climbing areas at Rabenfels in the Bäratal, between the “Mister Wendl” and “Gebrüderweg” routes, are open from 1 August to 31 December. The dates are important for this outing; check current regulations before your visit.

Let what you would like to discover during your stay guide your search.
