Discover Murg: Trails, Nature and Architecture
Accommodation in Murg
Murg combines the diverse landscape of Thimos, a range of routes and distinctive Black Forest architecture. This lets you tailor your stay to your interests: observe nature, compare routes or learn about regional architecture. The differences between these individual themes are especially easy to see in Thimos and on the various circular trails.
Thimos: Habitats, Views and Local History
Thimos is a popular recreation area known for its rich biodiversity. Biotopes connect fishponds, irrigated meadows and meadow ditches. Thimos offers beautiful views of the Swiss Jura—a scenic feature that complements the area's natural attractions. The Thimos nature trail explores these themes with information panels about hedgerow, pond and forest-edge habitats. The panels also provide information about the history of the Thimoshof farm. The trail thus brings together natural and local history, rather than focusing on individual habitats alone. The St. Anthony's Chapel in Thimos, built in 2005, invites you to pause for a moment.
Comparing Circular Trails and the Murgtal Trail
The two Nordic walking circuits towards Murg-Oberhof differ in both length and elevation gain. The blue route is about 5.5 kilometres long, with an elevation difference of 130 metres. The black circuit is about 7.6 kilometres long, with an elevation difference of 210 metres. Both start at the northern edge of Murg. According to these figures, the blue route is shorter and has less elevation gain, while the black route is longer and has a greater elevation difference.
The Murgtal Trail includes six signposted circular hiking routes for families, each 5 to 11 kilometres long. The Murgtal Trail itself was redesigned and opened in 2025. It is 27 kilometres long and runs from its source in Herrischried to its mouth at the Rhine near Murg. Information about natural, historical and current regional topics complements the route. The six family circuits and the longer trail therefore offer different route options for planning your trip.
A Regional Cycling Route
At the regional level, the 264-kilometre Southern Black Forest Cycle Route also passes through Murg. It loops around the Southern Black Forest Nature Park without any elevation gain. Its length differs considerably from that of the local Nordic walking circuits. If you plan to take this cycling route, check the current route before setting out.
Architecture in Murg-Niederhof
The Zechenwihler Hotzenhaus in Murg-Niederhof was built in 1748. It is a typical Black Forest house, with a ridge-post construction, a hipped roof and post-and-plank walls. Its construction date and design make the house an example of historic Black Forest architecture.
Another Aspect of Regional History
In the wider Waldshut destination, the ferry connection between Waldshut and Switzerland has a history of more than 600 years. This is another historical transport link in the region. If you plan to take the ferry, check the current departure times in advance.
Tailor Your Stay to Your Interests
When looking for accommodation in Murg, you can start by deciding what you want to focus on during your holiday. Thimos offers landscapes and local history, the circular trails provide different route options, and the Hotzenhaus showcases regional architecture.
