Wildflecken combines Rhön local history with a range of ways to explore the municipality: the Altortrunde passes historical landmarks, the paved pump track offers a different focus, and Oberbach is home to a biosphere centre and the starting point of a hiking trail. When planning your trip, you can decide whether local history, activity or a hike should be the main focus.

Three districts, one regional setting

The market municipality of Wildflecken comprises the districts of Wildflecken, Oberwildflecken and Oberbach. It lies northeast of Bad Brückenau, right next to the Schwarze Berge Nature Reserve in the Rhön Biosphere Reserve. The experiences described are spread across different themes and locations within the municipality: the Altortrunde runs through Wildflecken, while the biosphere centre is in Oberbach, where a hiking trail also begins.

Local history on the Altortrunde

The Altortrunde Wildflecken is an approximately two-kilometre circular route through Wildflecken. Along the way, it passes historic half-timbered houses, evidence of Rhön religious devotion, wayside shrines and boundary stones. This brings together architectural history, religious landmarks and boundary markers on one route. If you would like to get to know a place through visible traces of its history, this route offers a distinct cultural and historical focus. Its approximate length also provides a practical guide for fitting it into your day’s plans.

Activity and hiking

Another option is the paved “PUMP BASE” pump track in Wildflecken, which opened in June 2020. It is quite different from the historical circular route as a focus for your plans: here, the emphasis is on an activity-oriented facility rather than a route with historical stops. Check the facility’s current conditions before planning to use it.

The district of Oberbach is home to the Rhön Biosphere Centre “Haus der Schwarzen Berge,” which also houses the Rhön GmbH Tourist Information Office. Check the current services before your trip. A hiking trail of approximately three kilometres leads from the “Haus der Schwarzen Berge” Biosphere Information Centre to the visitor mine at Großer Auersberg. The two route descriptions have different focuses: the Altortrunde is a circular route through Wildflecken, while the hiking trail leads from the centre to a named destination. Check current conditions before setting out on your hike.

A quiet place of remembrance

In the municipality of Wildflecken, the Polish Cemetery is a burial ground with memorial plaques for the dead. A separate memorial plaque commemorates the children. This place of remembrance adds a serious, quiet perspective to the themes of local history and activity.

Bad Kissingen and the wider region

Beyond Wildflecken, the wider destination of Bad Kissingen offers a regional perspective on the district of Bad Kissingen. It lies on the southern edge of the Rhön and combines its foothills and open landscapes with a long wine-making tradition and valuable healing water. The Schondratal is one of Franconia’s most beautiful unspoilt forest valleys. These natural and cultural features give the region a distinctive setting that extends beyond the individual experiences in the municipality of Wildflecken.

Transport information is also provided at district level: the A 7 between Fulda and Würzburg and the A 71 between Erfurt and Schweinfurt cross the district of Bad Kissingen from north to south. Since 1 January 2025, the district has been part of the Mainfranken public transport network (NVM).

When comparing accommodation, first decide what you want to focus on: the Altortrunde and its historical stops, the pump track or the trail to the visitor mine. This way, you can choose where to stay based on what you would like to experience in Wildflecken and in the wider destination of Bad Kissingen.
