Röhrmoos offers traces of history, a landscape shaped by its past, and a cycling route that passes through several places. Church art and the former use of the moor offer a different focus from a cycling tour. The wider Dachau destination has further landscape and cultural themes to explore.

Churches and Spa History

Two stained-glass Art Nouveau windows inside the church recall Empress Sisi’s spa stays in Mariabrunn. Mariabrunn is part of the municipality of Röhrmoos; Amalie Hohenester practised there from 1863. The guest books of the time recorded nobles and wealthy citizens from across Europe, including Empress Elisabeth (Sisi) of Austria. The spa’s history therefore encompasses both the memory of Sisi’s stays and records of visitors from many parts of Europe.

The branch church of St. Lantpert, also called Lampert, stands on the northeastern edge of Riedenzhofen. Both names refer to the same church. This precise location helps identify the church associated with Riedenzhofen.

Landscape and Cycling Route

Peat was once cut in the moor southeast of Riedenzhofen. The last peat ditches and huts disappeared around 1970. This former use broadens the focus from churches and spa history to changes in the landscape.

The 7 Monasteries Route is a cycling route that passes through Röhrmoos and Großinzemoos on its way to Markt Indersdorf. Alongside the area’s historical connections, there is a route linking several named places. If you are planning your trip primarily around cycling, this route offers a focus of its own; those more interested in churches and landscape history will find other topics to plan around.

In the Dachau Destination: Landscape and Culture

The wider Dachau destination offers further ideas for excursions and exploration. The Karlsfelder See recreation area lies directly beside the built-up area of Karlsfeld-Nord, covers 58.2 hectares and is used year-round for walking, jogging, cycling and recreation. A different setting is offered by the approximately 2.5-kilometre-long “Lebensader Maisach” (Maisach Lifeline) trail along the River Maisach: it can be accessed without barriers from Bergkirchen or Günding. The regional offering therefore includes both a recreation area used throughout the year and a riverside trail with barrier-free access.

The cultural attractions also offer a variety of experiences. On the Petersberg near Erdweg stands a Romanesque basilica, built in 1104 and preserved to this day. A 200-metre-long sculpture trail with ten artworks at eight stations runs through Petersberg Forest. In Dachau, the picturesque historic old town invites visitors to stroll and linger, and is protected as an architectural ensemble. Together, these attractions offer different themes to explore: Romanesque architecture, art in the forest and a protected historic town centre.

The museums round out this selection with their own distinct areas of focus. The Dachau District Museum displays exhibits across three floors on settlement patterns, town history, guilds and market rights, crafts and trade, everyday life, festive customs and popular religious culture. The permanent collection of the Dachau Picture Gallery comprises landscape and genre paintings from the 19th and early 20th centuries. At the Altomünster Museum, the permanent exhibition presents the history of the Order of Saint Birgitta in Europe and its founder, Saint Birgitta of Sweden, including through the example of the now-closed Altomünster monastery, which had been in existence for 500 years.
