Kalchreuth can be explored through two themes: its cherry orchards and its rich architectural and ecclesiastical history. There are also nature trails and Nordic walking paths; the Upper Franconian Way of St. James also passes through the town. This gives you a choice when planning your trip between outdoor activity and a closer look at art and architecture. These highlights can also help guide your search for accommodation in Kalchreuth.

Cherry orchards and outdoor trails

A three-kilometre circular trail through the Kalchreuth cherry orchards passes information boards about cherries, the surrounding landscape and the town of Kalchreuth. The route combines exercise with insights into several topics: you can follow the trail while taking in both the cherry orchards and the information about the landscape and town.

If you prefer to choose your activity from a range of routes, Kalchreuth Forest has four varied Nordic walking trails. They differ in distance and incline and are suitable for beginners and advanced walkers year-round. The different route lengths and inclines give you a practical basis for making your choice: consider which distance and profile suit your day.

Church, art and historic buildings

St. Andrew’s Church brings together several historic details. Its nave dates from 1471; the chancel, donated by the Haller family, was added in 1494. The church also houses a winged altarpiece from the workshop of Michael Wolgemut, Albrecht Dürer’s teacher. The Passion altarpiece combines a specific workshop attribution with a vivid depiction: its panorama of the Passion comprises twelve scenes from the story of Jesus’s suffering. During Lent, the wings are closed. To understand the altarpiece, then, consider its origins, its seasonal presentation and the number of scenes depicted.

The tithe barn offers a different perspective on architectural history. It is one of the oldest known half-timbered buildings in Kalchreuth and one of the oldest barns in the Nuremberg region. The former Hallerschloss, meanwhile, is an example of a small patrician manor house in the Old Nuremberg region. The two buildings therefore represent different aspects of the town’s historic character: one is a barn classified by its construction and age, the other a manor house defined by its architectural and social character.

Kalchreuth on longer routes and a taste of the region

The 183-kilometre Upper Franconian Way of St. James runs from Hof to Nuremberg. Its last two stages go from Hof via Bayreuth to Nuremberg and pass through Kalchreuth. Compared with the three-kilometre circular trail through the cherry orchards, the Way of St. James is part of a much longer route. This gives you the choice between a local loop with information boards and a place that also lies along a multi-day pilgrimage route.

As a taste of the region, adults are recommended to try the cherry Secco typical of the district. It is available directly in Kalchreuth; points of sale may vary. If you would like to try it, it is best to ask where it is currently available.

Which accommodation suits your travel interests?

When looking for accommodation in Kalchreuth, you can start by considering what you would like your stay to focus on. If outdoor activity and nature are priorities, the Nordic walking trails and the circular route through the cherry orchards offer different options. If you are more interested in art and architectural history, you can also visit St. Andrew’s Church, the tithe barn and the former Hallerschloss. If your travel group has different interests, you can take these themes into account together when planning. This way, your search can focus on the experience that interests you most in Kalchreuth.
