Kunreuth: Moated Castle, Village History and Cultural Trail
Accommodation in Kunreuth
Kunreuth brings together a moated castle, buildings that reflect local history, and a cultural trail that explores how a village has developed. These different themes offer historical perspectives on the architectural form of a castle, the village centre and changes up to the present day.
Moated Castle and Local History in Kunreuth
Kunreuth Castle is a moated castle consisting of a main castle and an outer bailey. It is privately owned and houses apartments and offices; the interiors are not open to visitors. The old town hall is considered an important testament to the village’s history. St. Luke’s Church stands at the centre of what is thought to be Kunreuth’s oldest settlement. The castle, town hall and church each make a distinct contribution: the moated castle is notable for its distinctive architectural form, while the church and town hall illustrate the history of the village centre.
The history of the first synagogue is also part of Kunreuth’s past. It is documented from 1660 and stood in the middle of the village, by the bridge over the Toppbach, at today’s address of Kirchberg 3. This location anchors a chapter of Jewish history at a specific place in the village.
Explore Village History on Foot
The cultural trail passes through Kunreuth and part of its surrounding countryside. Along the trail, you can explore and experience the history and present-day life of a village, from its beginnings to the changes of the 20th and 21st centuries. The focus is therefore not just on a single building, but on how a place has changed over a long period.
The St. Margaret Mountain Chapel in Regensberg
Regensberg is another place of interest within the municipality. It is home to St. Margaret Mountain Chapel, first mentioned in a document in 1376. The chapel contains several works with different historical associations: a valuable Madonna was brought out from behind the high altar after restoration and is now on the right-hand side. The Baroque high altar, with its magnificent structure, formerly stood in the Carmelite Church in Bamberg; the distinctive altar of the Fourteen Holy Helpers dates from the 16th century. The chapel thus brings together an early documentary reference and furnishings whose individual pieces reflect different periods and stories.
