A 12 km circular hiking trail, a village church right by the lake, and birdwatching from the trails define Riegsee. The village church of St. Stephen in Riegsee is right by Lake Riegsee, in the Blue Land region. The surrounding area also offers marked trails and viewpoints. Trail length, the landscapes you want to experience, and the time of year are useful considerations when planning: you can focus on a longer hike, nature watching, or winter activities on the lake.

The lake, birdlife, and the seasons

Lake Riegsee lies near the destination and is 2.4 km long and 1 km wide. From the trails around Lake Riegsee, you can observe birdlife with the naked eye. In summer, access to the protected north bay is restricted; bear this in mind if you are visiting the area. This combines nature watching and protection of the bay with a specific seasonal restriction.

In winter, Lake Riegsee often freezes over completely for weeks, offering good conditions for ice skaters, Bavarian curling players, and ice sailors. This adds a very different seasonal focus to the wildlife watching from the trails. As the lake often freezes over, but not reliably every winter, ice conditions are not a dependable basis for planning.

Circular trails and views

The Lake Riegsee circular hiking trail is 12 km long. In the surrounding area, marked hiking and cycling trails, as well as field and forest paths, lead around Lake Riegsee to nearby villages and viewpoints. A shorter option with a specified length is the 2 km Froschsee circular trail, which leads to the small church of St. Leonhard. The two distances give you a concrete comparison if you want to plan your hike based on its length.

Other trails each have a named route or viewpoint: The Alpenaussichtsweg in the surrounding area passes through Guglhör and Perlach on its way to Hagen. From Aidlinger Höhe, panoramic views extend across the mountains and the Loisach Valley to the Zugspitze. This gives you a clearly specified circular trail length, a route passing through several villages, and far-reaching views to suit different hiking interests.

The adventure playground at Lake Riegsee is also open for play. This gives you a named place to play, in addition to hiking trails and nature watching, to consider when planning your day.

More to discover in Garmisch-Partenkirchen

The wider destination of Garmisch-Partenkirchen offers other nature, culture, and mountain experiences. Visitors can walk through the Partnach Gorge between towering rock walls and experience the water rushing below them. The gorge was declared a natural monument and opened to visitors in 1912. The Richard Strauss Institute is housed in historic Villa Christina in the spa gardens of Partenkirchen and features a permanent exhibition on Strauss's life and work. At 1,780 metres, Mount Wank, the local mountain of Partenkirchen, is a good choice for mountain hikes with far-reaching views. These destinations offer a different focus from Riegsee’s lake and trail landscape.

If your main interests are the Partnach Gorge, the Richard Strauss Institute, or Mount Wank, you can consider Garmisch-Partenkirchen as a separate destination to search for. This lets you tailor your search to the places and experiences you want to define your stay.
