Großkötz combines architectural history spanning several centuries with the Günztal Cycle Path. When planning your trip, you can therefore focus on different things: historic churches, chapels and former residential and agricultural buildings, or cycling between Großkötz and Wasserburg. You can also plan a trip that combines both, according to your interests.

Churches and historic buildings in Großkötz

The Catholic parish church of St. Peter and Paul brings together several building phases. Its late Gothic core was built between 1480 and 1520; the church is a Gothic structure that Joseph Dossenberger remodelled in the Baroque style in 1764/65. St. Anna Chapel is a neo-Baroque chapel from the 19th century, remodelled around 1900 and containing furnishings. Both buildings provide a tangible architectural focus for the history of the town.

The rectory also points to an earlier use: it was the summer residence of the provosts of Wettenhausen. Joseph Dossenberger built the hipped-roof structure with pilaster articulation in 1760. A hipped roof has sloping roof surfaces on all sides; pilasters are flat, vertical projections on a wall. The former Benefiziatenhaus offers a different architectural accent: it is a two-storey building, aligned with its eaves facing the street, and designed with a pitched roof and curved gables. It dates from the late 18th century.

At the former Vogteihof, the residential building, stable and outbuildings form an agricultural complex enclosed by a courtyard wall and a gate. Other attractions in Großkötz include the Ölbergkapelle in the cemetery, the Gasthaus Adler and the Herrgotsruh Chapel. Together with St. Anna and St. Peter and Paul, these offer a wide selection of named historic buildings, rather than a single building serving as the only place to explore local history.

More history in the wider destination of Kötz

The wider destination of Kötz brings in distinct stories from other districts. In Ebersbach, the church of St. John the Baptist has an older core with a three-sided choir end and a west tower; it was remodelled in the Baroque style around 1700. In Kleinkötz, the Lettenkreuz commemorates Latvian resettlers in 1946. The von Holzapfelsche Schloss, a three-storey hipped-roof building with a pond complex, is also located there. These examples add to the picture of Kötz without conflating the buildings of Großkötz with those in other districts.
