Kohlberg: Nature Trails, Orchards and Historic Routes
Accommodation in Kohlberg
Explore Kohlberg through its natural attractions and historic trails. The signposted circular trail in the Klingenbachtal and the longer hike along historic old roads differ both in length and character. There is also an orchard, a summit cross and a dedicated viewpoint. If you’re looking for accommodation in Kohlberg, you can start by considering whether nature information boards and fruit varieties, or historic routes and views, better suit your travel plans.
Nature trail and orchard in the Klingenbachtal
The signposted Klingenbachtal nature trail is a circular route about 3 km long. Information boards cover different habitats and how the landscape is used. An orchard has also been planted in the nature trail area. Along the Weißen Weg and the Bernsteinstraße, fruit trees have been planted representing 35 different varieties of apple, pear and damson. If you’re interested in habitats, land use and fruit varieties, you’ll find several specific topics to explore along the route through Kohlberg.
Hiking along historic old roads
The hike along historic old roads, about 6.2 km long, begins on Flurstraße, a few metres east of the Catholic church in Kohlberg. A detour from the hike leads to a summit cross on the Kohlbühl. At 588 metres, the Kohlbühl is the highest point of the Kohlberger Höhen. From the Dreifaltigkeit viewpoint along the hike, the view extends west as far as the Franconian Jura. The two hiking options can be distinguished by their approximate lengths: the circular trail in the Klingenbachtal is about 3 km long, while the route along the old roads is about 6.2 km.
BernsteinstraĂźe and cycling route connections
The Bernsteinstraße, one of several historic routes between the North and Baltic Seas and the Adriatic, ran through Kohlberg. It probably dates back to pre-Christian times. St Nicholas’ Church is on Route 7 of the Simultankirchen cycling route. In this way, the historic roads featured on the hike complement a specific cycling route connection in Kohlberg.

In Parkstein, the basalt cone is another regional highlight: it was included in Bavaria’s list of the 100 most beautiful geotopes in 2003 and was awarded the designation “National Geotope” in 2006. At the Parkstein Volcano Experience Centre, a volcanic eruption is recreated every hour and can be experienced on three levels. Check the times before your visit.
