In Schirmitz, local history and church architecture meet sweeping views over Weidener Bay. A hill in the southeastern part of the municipality, on the road to Bechtsrieth, offers panoramic views across the entire bay. Other highlights include distinctive details at St. James’s Church, in the cemetery and at the history fountain by the town hall. When planning your trip, you can choose your own focus between scenic views and local culture.

Church Architecture and Local History in Schirmitz

St. James’s Church is a chancel-tower church: the tower stands directly above the sanctuary, which is adjoined by a single-nave church hall. The church is designed in the Gründerzeit style, now very rare in Bavaria. If you are interested in architectural forms, you will find two specific features to look for here: the tower’s unusual position and the single-nave floor plan. The furnishings also tell an older story. The three altars and the pulpit date from around 1754.

A different, understated motif defines the cemetery in Schirmitz: it is known for its plain wooden crosses, considered unique in Bavaria. The history fountain by the town hall, in turn, tells the story of the town. Together, these features offer different points of interest for a stay focused not only on the landscape but also on local architectural and commemorative heritage.

Panoramic Views and a Hiking Option with a Set Distance

The view across the entire Weidener Bay provides a scenic highlight. The Panorama Trail also runs east of Schirmitz. It is 4.3 kilometers long, with 103 meters of elevation gain. These figures give you a clear idea of the route’s scale and help distinguish it from longer regional trails. The trail is close to the destination, while the hill with panoramic views is in the southeastern part of the municipality, on the road to Bechtsrieth.

Neustadt An Der Waldnaab as the Wider Travel Region

Schirmitz is part of the wider travel destination of Neustadt An Der Waldnaab. Neustadt an der Waldnaab district is part of the Upper Palatinate Forest destination; activities mentioned there include hiking, cycling, museum visits and swimming in numerous bathing lakes. This regional selection adds further nature, culture and activity ideas to Schirmitz’s local highlights, without suggesting that these are all available in the town itself.

The Bockl is a notable option for cycling and hiking: this 52-kilometer route follows a historic railway line from Neustadt an der Waldnaab to Eslarn and can be used on foot, by bike or on inline skates. It is mostly paved and traffic-free, with gradients exceeding three percent only rarely. This long regional route is therefore quite different from the 4.3-kilometer Panorama Trail east of Schirmitz. The Bockl’s starting point in Neustadt an der Waldnaab is directly accessible by train. Trains run every hour to the terminus of the Nuremberg–Neustadt an der Waldnaab line, where you can transfer directly to a bike. Check the timetable before setting off.

Parkstein and Speinshart also offer their own highlights within the wider travel destination of Neustadt An Der Waldnaab. The Parkstein basalt cone was included in the list of Bavaria’s 100 most beautiful geotopes in 2003 and received the title “National Geotope” in 2006. In Parkstein, the historic walking tour starts at the Landrichterschloss, which houses the Museum Vulkanerlebnis Parkstein. A public guided tour of Speinshart Abbey Church takes place at 3 p.m. on Sundays and public holidays. As tour times may change, check the abbey’s official website before your visit.
