Bergrheinfeld lies at the southern end of the Schweinfurt Basin. Around Garstadt, gentle hills meet wooded shell limestone slopes; several cycle paths also pass through the village. Nature watching, local traditions and cycling routes of varying lengths offer different reasons to explore the area.

River landscape and birdwatching

The Schweinfurt Basin is a low-lying area shaped by the Main and Wern rivers. Both rivers run partly along the municipal boundary. Near Garstadt, steep, wooded shell limestone slopes reach close to the Main. The old course of the Main is also part of the landscape; most of it is protected.

A total of 240 bird species have been recorded in the Garstadt bird sanctuary; around 45 of them are on the Red List of threatened species. These figures are based on cumulative records and may change over time. In 2006, the Schweinfurt district built an observation platform there for birdwatching. Information boards give visitors an overview of the local flora and fauna.

Cycle routes for different rides

The 18-kilometre circular route “Past the Main and the vineyards” connects the Wern and Main valleys and passes through the wine-growing villages of Garstadt and Hergolshausen. The flat route is easy and family-friendly, has no significant climbs and runs mostly along dedicated paved paths, as well as some quiet roads. Check the current route before setting out.

In addition, three cycle routes of varying lengths pass through Bergrheinfeld. The 606-kilometre Main Cycle Route runs from the Main’s sources via Kulmbach, Bamberg and Schweinfurt to its mouth in the Rhine near Wiesbaden. The 78-kilometre Wern Cycle Route follows the Wern from its source via Bergrheinfeld to Gemünden-Wernfeld, where the Wern flows into the Main. The 135-kilometre Main-Werra Cycle Route runs from Würzburg via Werneck, Bergrheinfeld and Schweinfurt to Meiningen in Thuringia. This allows you to compare a local circular route through two valleys and wine-growing villages with routes linking Bergrheinfeld to destinations further afield.

Cyclists can use three charging stations in the municipality, each with four charging lockers: in the car park next to the old town hall in Garstadt, in the Gartenstraße car park in Bergrheinfeld and in the Zehnthof, Hauptstraße 36, in Bergrheinfeld. If you plan to use a station, check its current availability on site.

At the Garstadt riverfront promenade, by the former ferry crossing, there is a ramp-style landing stage at river kilometre 322.9. Check local conditions before visiting.

Church festivals in Bergrheinfeld and Garstadt

At the annual Bergrheinfeld church festival, usually held in August, a parade passes through the village on Saturday. Led by the Kirchweihreiter, the Plüaburschen bring two maypoles to the festival grounds and set them up at the entrance. The Plüapaare then dance there. In Garstadt, the church festival is celebrated in November with its own tradition: the Fichtenburschen parade through the village with the church-festival fir trees, accompanied by the village musicians; the trees are set up in front of the inns.

Plan your stay

Cycling, nature watching and church festivals offer different ways to spend your stay. When planning your rides, it is useful to distinguish between the 18-kilometre circular route and the longer cycle-route connections; if you are visiting for a church festival, it is worth checking the exact date.
