In Bogen, monastic history and culture are part of the picture, alongside an urban green space, a pilgrimage route and churches throughout the town. Bogenberg is also a special attraction for nature lovers: its flora and fauna make it a natural history highlight.

Monastic History and Culture in Oberalteich

Until secularisation in 1803, Oberalteich was a monastic village with a Benedictine abbey. The former monastery buildings form Oberalteich’s historic centre and have been renovated. The KulturForum Oberalteich has been housed in the former monastery mill since 1998. Since then, it has offered concerts, readings, cabaret, lectures, seminars and exhibitions. If you have a particular event in mind, check the current programme in advance.

Green Spaces, Pilgrimage Route and Orientation

In the centre of Bogen is Europapark Bayern-Böhmen, an urban green space intended for local residents and tourists to enjoy. The tree trail in the park features more than 20 tree species. Another highlight is the European pilgrimage route VIA NOVA, which passes through Bogen. Two panoramic information boards for visitors stand on Bogenberg, south of Oberalteich and right by the Danube Cycle Path.

Sights in the town include St. Florian’s parish church, St. Andreas Parish Church in Degernbach, St. Margaretha Parish Church in Pfelling and the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Redeemer. These named places provide useful orientation when planning to include culture and sights in your visit.

Bogen railway station has an information point offering tourist information and details about train connections. The Bavarian Forest Nature Park information point is also located there, with the permanent exhibition “The Danube and Bogenberg”. Before planning a specific visit, check the practical opening details and find out about current services before setting off.

Plan Your Stay to Suit You

When looking for accommodation in Bogen, you can start by prioritising your interests: culture and monastic history in Oberalteich, the green space and tree trail in the centre, or churches, nature and the pilgrimage route. These highlights can help you choose accommodation based on its location in relation to the experiences you want to visit.

More Things to Do in the Straubing-Bogen Destination

The Bavarian Forest, the fertile Gäuboden plain and the Danube shape the holiday region of Straubing-Bogen. Families with children can enjoy three day trips in Bogen: the “Culture Tour”, the “Beer Garden Tour” and the “Left and Right of the Danube” tour.

The routes in Wiesenfelden also offer distinct options for planning: the accessible circular route around Beckenweiher is 2.3 kilometres long and suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs. Five information points with benches and panels cover the pond’s flora and fauna, protected status and history; the route also crosses a 110-metre-long nature observation boardwalk. The Kobelberg nature trail is about 4.5 kilometres long, has nine stations, is suitable for pushchairs and is cleared in winter too. This makes it possible to compare the shorter route around Beckenweiher, which is wheelchair-accessible, with the longer Kobelberg trail, which is cleared in winter, based on their stated features.
