Truchtlaching lies in the Upper Alz Valley and brings together the Alz, a Gothic church, a hiking route with mountain views and archaeological traces in the surrounding area. The river is more than just a backdrop: boats and rafts travel along the gently flowing stretch to Truchtlaching. This lets you choose between nature, culture and different ways of getting around.

The Alz and the Landscape of the Upper Alz Valley

Truchtlaching is surrounded by fields, forests and meadows. The stretch of the Alz that passes through the village also has designated protected status: it is part of the FFH area 8041-302 “Alz from Lake Chiemsee to Altenmarkt”. If you are making specific plans in the protected area, check its boundaries in advance.

Church and Archaeological Traces

St. John the Baptist Church stands on the banks of the Alz. Its Gothic structure was built in 1435 and extended to the west in 1956. The church also houses a Pietà dating from around 1500. Its architecture and art each offer a distinct reason to explore the history of the village.

The Archaeological Trail offers another historical perspective: Station 3 is a Celtic farmstead near Truchtlaching. Together with the church’s architectural history, this shows that cultural interest need not be limited to a single building.

Hiking, Swimming and Exploring the Alz

The “Keltenschanze Truchtlaching” hiking route is 4.0 kilometres long and starts at the Alzbad car park. After leaving the forest, you can enjoy views across the Alz and the Chiemgau Alps. The route combines a clearly stated distance with a specific landscape highlight.

You can swim in the Alz at Alzbad. The Alzbad car park is also the starting point for the hiking route, so the area offers two different options for planning your day without requiring you to choose the same activity.

The options on the water also vary. The Alz raft trip runs from Seebruck to Truchtlaching through the Upper Alz Valley Landscape Conservation Area. Depending on the water level, the trip takes two to three hours; the return journey from Truchtlaching to Seebruck is by bus and is included in the price. Before taking a boat trip, check the water level and local rules.

On the “Alztal from Truchtlaching” route, the Alz is crossed by cable ferry. Ask at Gasthaus Roiter in advance about the ferry times. This gives you a specific planning tip for this route, while water level, duration and return transport are the main factors for the raft trip.

When looking for accommodation, you can first consider what you want to set the pace of your stay: a hike with a view, a trip on the river or cultural history. The “Keltenschanze Truchtlaching” route is defined by its 4.0-kilometre length, while the raft trip is defined by a duration of two to three hours, depending on the water level. These are different ways of planning: distance on land and time on the water.
