Discover Schirnding: Cycling Routes and Border History
Accommodation in Schirnding
Schirnding draws attention to two distinctive themes: the cross-border route of the Bavaria-Bohemia Bridge Cycle Path and the history of border and customs services. The village market adds an event with a clearly defined date. This lets you distinguish between cycling, an interest in cultural history and a stay centred around the market when planning your trip. Schirnding’s character is shaped by this combination of activity, local history and community events.
Cycling routes with different focuses
The Bavaria-Bohemia Bridge Cycle Path runs from Fichtelberg via Tröstau, Wunsiedel, Thiersheim and Selb. Near Schirnding, the route crosses the border and continues to the Czech town of Aš. This makes Schirnding a border town on a longer route. The sequence of towns listed and the destination across the border both help with orientation. You can plan your stay as a visit to Schirnding in its own right or as part of a cross-border ride.
There is also a specific point of reference for the Eger Cycle Path: a 529-metre-long, paved section in the Fischern area near Schirnding was opened to public cycling. This differs from the Bridge Cycle Path, which passes through several towns on its way to Aš: the Eger Cycle Path is represented here by a single section. These different scales can be useful when planning your trip—a route through several towns on the one hand, and a precise description of one section on the other.
Border history and customs services
The Bavarian Border Museum offers a specific focus on Schirnding’s cultural history. The museum opened in its new premises at Hauptstraße 15 on 5 August 2023. Its exhibition presents the history of the Federal Border Guard; original equipment and historical uniforms convey what daily life at the border was like. The history of customs goes back much further: customs collectors had been working at Schirnding Pass since the 18th century, and in 1833 the customs office was elevated to the rank of main customs office. The exhibition on the Federal Border Guard and the earlier milestones in customs administration thus offer distinct historical perspectives.
The Schirnding Village Market
The Schirnding Village Market takes place on the last Saturday in August and welcomes visitors from near and far. On 29 August 2026, the market filled the entire village centre with attractions and stalls selling regional products, handicrafts and treats. If you would like to plan your trip around the market, check the date of the relevant edition. This lets you make market day a reason for your trip in its own right and combine it with your interests in cycling or local history.
Choose your accommodation based on what brings you here
When looking for accommodation in Schirnding, it is worth deciding in advance what you want to focus on during your stay. Is the cross-border cycle path your main priority, would you like to learn more about local history, or do you want to plan your stay around the village market? This priority can help you organise your choices. If you are travelling with different interests, you can weigh up cycling, border history and the market as separate highlights rather than assuming a single fixed itinerary.
