Kroppen – Park Landscape and Baroque Church
Accommodation in Kroppen
Kroppen combines a landscaped park with Baroque architecture and a 38-kilometre touring route. The landscape park is considered the cultural centre of the municipality; the Baroque church makes its own mark with its construction period and named works of art. This brings landscape design, local history and a longer tour together as options for planning a trip.
Landscaped Park and Historical Traces
Kroppen Landscape Park offers opportunities for recreation, tranquillity and enjoying nature. Features of Eduard Petzold’s design are still visible: the terrain is undulating, and groups of trees create shifting patterns of light and shade. The site is therefore characterised not only by individual architectural landmarks, but also by its designed landscape.
Individual historical traces give the park specific points of reference in time. The half-timbered cellar house was built on Kellerberg in 1715. The lime avenue by the western park gate, in the direction of the mill, was planted in 1922. The building and the avenue represent different aspects of the park’s history.
Baroque Church and Local History
Kroppen Baroque Church was built between 1718 and 1721 and is considered one of the few new church buildings in southern Brandenburg from the 18th century. Renowned Dresden artists were involved in its design. Its furnishings include a pulpit altar by Christian Näther and an epitaph for the builder, attributed to Johann Thomae. The construction period, the artists’ involvement and the two specifically named works offer different points of reference for placing the church in its cultural and historical context.
Woodland and Tour Overview
The “Kroppen” property is a forested area of just under 96 hectares in Lusatia, on the border with Saxony. The Kroppen protected area lies within the “Elsterniederung und westliche Oberlausitzer Heide zwischen Senftenberg und Ortrand” landscape conservation area and includes a small section of the “Pulsnitz und Niederungsbereiche DE 4547-303” Special Area of Conservation. Alongside the landscaped park, woodland and designated protected areas are also natural features to explore.
The 38-kilometre Ruhlander Heath Tour passes through Kroppen and highlights the town as a stop featuring a Baroque church and landscape park. This offers two distinct focuses to consider: the town’s cultural attractions and a longer tour as an activity in its own right. Which of these perspectives shapes your stay can also guide your search for suitable accommodation.
In the wider Oberspreewald-Lausitz travel destination
In the Oberspreewald-Lausitz district, hiking routes range from 4 to 32 kilometres. Cycling routes start at 40 kilometres and include individual or guided multi-day tours with good opportunities for breaks and refreshments. More than 580 kilometres of signposted cycling routes connect areas between the Spreewald and the Kmehlen Hills, as well as linking southern Brandenburg with Saxony and northern Brandenburg.
A different landscape awaits in the south of the district: the flooding of former open-cast mines is creating a waterscape of more than 20 artificial lakes, known as the Lusatian Lakeland. The historic old town of Lübbenau/Spreewald also includes a Neoclassical palace ensemble. These regional attractions complement Kroppen’s park and church history without implying that they are features of the entire district.
