Discover Meyenburg through its city history, museums and palace park. Historic buildings and the remains of the former city wall offer a different perspective from the landscaped park grounds. When planning your trip, you can therefore prioritise different interests: city history and architecture, museum topics, or nature and garden design.

City History, Church and Museum

Meyenburg was founded at the beginning of the 13th century on the upper reaches of the Stepenitz. The town and castle were first mentioned in a document in 1285 under the name “Meyenborch”. The time of the town’s founding and its first written mention are two distinct historical reference points: the 1285 entry records the name, while the town was founded at the beginning of the 13th century.

The Evangelical Church of Meyenburg has a detached Neo-Gothic brick tower, built in 1848/50. Its style, brick construction and detached form give the tower a distinctive architectural character. Three separate sections of Meyenburg’s former city wall remain, recalling the town’s earlier fortifications.

At the Fashion Museum & Meyenburg Castle Museum, you can learn about the noble von Rohr family and the history of the town. The exhibition on the history of the Prignitz region in the 20th century at Meyenburg Castle Museum offers another perspective: the life of a person from the Prignitz serves as a recurring thread throughout the exhibition. This places city history alongside an explicitly regional perspective.

On the last Sunday of each month, Josefine Edle von Krepl guides visitors through the permanent exhibition of the Fashion Museum at Meyenburg Castle. If this event is important to your travel plans, please check the current arrangements before your visit.

Palace Park and Landscaped Grounds

Around 1860, Meyenburg Palace Park was transformed into an extensive English-style landscape park according to plans by the court gardener Fink. Historically, it covered 30 Morgen, including a kitchen garden with greenhouses. Today, the park is described as having groups of trees and shrubs, winding paths, ponds and lawns, and individually planted, tall deciduous trees.

Based on a design by landscape architect Reinhard Schweizer, the park was restored and redesigned to reflect its original appearance. The redesign included laying out new park paths, installing benches and clearing the ponds. In this way, the history of the park’s design is combined with a tangible variety of paths, trees and shrubs, and water features. Unlike the historical themes of the church and museum, the focus here is on landscape design.

Plan Visits and Tours

The Hunger Tower is open to visitors as part of the local history museum and offers panoramic views. If you plan to visit this viewpoint, check the current arrangements before your trip. For a visit focused on history, the monthly guided tour of the permanent exhibition is another activity to consider. It takes place on the last Sunday of each month, and it is also advisable to check the current arrangements in advance.

Meyenburg is also connected to the Elbe–Müritz Circular Route, a long-distance cycling route. This lets you distinguish your interest in Meyenburg’s city and park history from the decision to include a cycling route in your travel plans.

The Prignitz Region as a Broader Travel Destination

If you look beyond Meyenburg to the wider Prignitz region as a travel destination, a broader nature perspective comes into view. The Brandenburg section of the cross-state “Flusslandschaft Elbe – Brandenburg” Biosphere Reserve covers around 53,000 hectares and lies almost entirely within the Prignitz district.

For cycling, the Prignitz region has a designated network of 1,100 kilometres of routes and 17 recommended cycle tours, which take in regional attractions and distinctive features. Network and tour details may be updated; check the latest route information when planning your trip. On the Elbe in the Prignitz, there are also tours with wildlife watching in the biosphere reserve, aimed at experienced paddlers. Cycling and paddling therefore cater to different regional travel interests.
