Mescherin between the Oder border and the polder landscape
Accommodation in Mescherin
Mescherin lies directly on the Polish border. The West Oder separates the Uckermark from Gryfino; a bridge connects the town with Gryfino on the Polish side of the Oder. Views over the polder, cycling and hiking trails, and traces of settlement from different periods offer several distinct ways to explore the area.
Polders, views and trails
The Staffelde protected area, Zone I, covers around 27 hectares within the municipality of Mescherin. In the Staffelde Polder, an area has been left undisturbed to develop into wilderness for 20 years. There is a crane-shaped observation tower at the edge of town. From its platform, you can look out over the Staffelde Polder.
The tower can be reached on foot from the L113; from the A11, take the Penkun exit. Road layouts and journey times may change, so it is worth checking current information before setting out.
The Oder–Neiße Cycle Route crosses the entire length of Mescherin. The 217-kilometre Märkischer Landweg begins or ends here; on its way to Mescherin, it passes through a sunken lane along the steep west bank of the Oder at Bollwerk. The climb to Stettiner Berg above the village is another option, but it is strenuous. This offers a clear contrast when planning your day: a cycle route through the town, a long-distance trail beginning or ending in Mescherin, and a distinctly challenging climb.
Archaeological traces and a protected monument
The Brandenburg archaeological register, in its edition dated 1 January 2025, records finds and sites in Mescherin associated with the Bronze Age, Neolithic, Slavic Middle Ages, Roman Imperial period and Iron Age. One listed site includes remains of the medieval and modern village centre and church, a Slavic medieval settlement, a modern-era cemetery and prehistoric settlement traces.
The church at Obere Dorfstraße 39 is also listed as a protected monument. The excerpt from the Brandenburg monument register dated 1 January 2025 records it as such. The archaeological entries and the listed church represent different ways of exploring the town’s history: from settlement traces spanning different periods to a specifically identified building.
Getting here and finding accommodation
There is a bus stop at the hiking car park, with services towards Tantow railway station and via Gartz to Schwedt/Oder. As transport services may change, check the current timetable before travelling.
Mescherin has accommodation and dining options; specific providers and availability may change. When planning, you can weigh up whether the cycle route, the Märkischer Landweg, the views over the polder or the town’s history is your main focus.
The Uckermark as a wider travel destination
The wider Uckermark travel region offers additional, distinct themes. The Uckermärkische Seen Nature Park includes clear-water lakes, kettle holes, bogs, terminal moraine ridges, drumlins and inland dunes. The nature park has more than 150 kilometres of water trails and over 600 kilometres of signposted hiking trails.
The Gramzow Railway Museum displays historic railway vehicles from different periods, exhibitions on track construction, railway workshops, operations and transport services, as well as technical installations outdoors and inside buildings. On operating days, the museum railway offers rides on historic railway vehicles and the chance to drive rail trolleys yourself.
