Schönaich between the Museum Cycle Route and local history
Accommodation in Schönaich
Schönaich combines cycling routes through varied countryside with insights into local history and a seasonal outdoor pool. You can shape your stay in different ways: with outdoor activities, discoveries at the local history museum or a day of swimming. Which of these experiences takes centre stage may also influence your choice of accommodation.
Explore the countryside by bike
The Museum Cycle Route is 60 kilometres long in total and runs between Weil der Stadt and Nürtingen. Near Schönaich, one section follows the Aich towards Waldenbuch. Streams, meadows and forests shape the varied landscape along the route. Standardised information boards help with navigation and also provide information about local attractions.
When planning, it is worth distinguishing the section near Schönaich from the full route: the 60 kilometres refer to the Museum Cycle Route between its two endpoints. The Seebachtal near Schönaich is also associated with cycling tours through nature, including routes linked to the Aichtal Cycle Route. Cycling can therefore be a focus in its own right, whether you have a longer route in mind or are interested in a tour through the countryside.
Local history at the Old Town Hall
The local history museum is housed in the Old Town Hall, at the corner of Große Gasse and Wettgasse. It regularly offers the opportunity to learn about Schönaich’s history on the first Sunday of every month; check the opening arrangements before your visit. The collection ranges from prehistoric finds to agricultural and craft tools from Schönaich and Miletitsch, as well as traditional costumes.
The museum barn also offers a glimpse into ways of life and work in the past. It showcases machines, tools, artefacts from former trades and rural traditions. Since 2011, two natural-stone ovens have stood in the second section of the barn. Alongside the finds and costumes, the barn provides a different perspective on local history, focusing on tools and past activities.
Schönaich was first documented in 1274 under the spellings “Schoenaich” and “Schoenenaich”; its origins probably date back to the 7th century. The history of the historic church also stretches far back: until 1309, it was known as St Martin’s Church, and later it was dedicated to St Lawrence. It served as a refuge and was surrounded by a wall with loopholes. These landmarks provide a historical setting for your visit to the town without requiring you to focus on any one period.
The forest outdoor pool and Hasenbühl Hocketse
The forest outdoor pool is designed with families in mind. The children’s pool consists of two pools connected by a slide; water play features and a sand area with mud tables round out the facilities. The large heated pool is supplied with water from a spring. There is also a natural-style Kneipp station, as well as beach volleyball, table tennis and areas for chess and Nine Men’s Morris.
The pool also has a children’s playground with a carousel, sandbox, climbing tower and slide. The season runs from mid-May to mid-September. As season dates and facilities may change, check the current opening hours and amenities before your visit. This helps you plan your trip to the pool around your travel dates.
The Hasenbühl Hocketse brings together music, sports demonstrations, hands-on activities and culinary specialities. There are also play areas and activities for children. The programme varies from one edition to the next, so check the specific dates before your trip. The outdoor pool and the Hocketse offer different ways to spend time in Schönaich: one with the seasonal facilities of a swimming complex, the other as part of an event programme.
