Schelingen – Hiking Trails, Wine and Open Landscapes
Accommodation in Schelingen
Schelingen brings together winegrowing, hiking trails and a varied landscape of orchards, vineyards, wooded hills and open meadows. Travelers looking to combine nature with regional wine culture will find a range of highlights, from hikes and viewpoints to the distinctive features of local winegrowing.
A landscape of forests, vineyards and meadows
Schelingen’s landscape includes the wooded ridges of Katharinenberg and Badberg, as well as the open meadows of Schelingen. Orchards and vineyards add to the picture. For hikers, the surrounding area offers a varied mix of landscapes, along with diverse fauna and flora and geological features. An approximately 42-hectare nature reserve lies on the open summit slopes of Badberg. So, alongside the wooded hills, the open slopes and their protected natural environment are also worth exploring.
Hiking and viewpoints
The Schelinger Höhe car park is a starting point for hikes in all directions across the Kaiserstuhl. For a more specific hiking idea, take the route from Schelingen’s sundial to the Schelinger Kreuz: the path follows Allmendgasse and a signposted farm track. These are two distinct hiking options: a starting point for trails in various directions and a route to a particular viewpoint.
The Schelinger Kreuz lies between Schelingen and Altvogtsburg and is one of Vogtsburg’s wine viewpoints. Regional wines and panoramic views come together here. Public parking options associated with the route include Allmendgasse and Bahlinger Eck; Schelingen Weihergarten is also connected with the viewpoint.
Winegrowing and local character
Schelingen has a tradition of winegrowing, and local wines are produced in its vineyards. Among experts, the Schelinger Kirchberg is highly regarded as a vineyard site. Together with the Schelinger Kreuz, it offers a look at two sides of wine: Kirchberg represents a renowned vineyard site, while the viewpoint combines regional wines with panoramic views. Exploring Schelingen gives visitors the chance to experience winegrowing both as part of the landscape and as a focus of their trip.

The Marien altar by Master HL is located in the Catholic fortified church of St. Michael in Niederrotweil. It was created between 1516 and 1520 and is considered a masterpiece of German woodcarving. The Baden Way of St. James passes by the church, where pilgrims can receive a pilgrim stamp. The artwork and the pilgrimage route thus offer different cultural points of interest in the same place.
Burkheim’s historic, heritage-protected old town includes townhouses, half-timbered houses, the town hall and the town gate. On his tour through Burkheim’s lanes, the night watchman sings a night-watchman’s song in Alemannic. The town’s history and living traditions thus complement the nature and winegrowing themes found in other places across the wider destination.
