Riegel am Kaiserstuhl brings together a long local history, Roman finds, and the geological features of Michaelsberg. The Archaeological Museum explores artefacts and everyday Roman life; Michaelsberg is known for its chapel, loess walls, and sweeping views across the region. Theatre, dining, and the town’s former brewing history also shape its character.

Roman History at the Museum

Riegel’s 7,000-year history is represented by numerous archaeologically significant finds. Around 300 of them are on display at the award-winning Archaeological Museum. Museum Riegel presents Regola, ancient Riegel, and everyday life in a Roman city north of the Alps around 2,000 years ago. The exhibits thus offer a perspective ranging from individual artefacts to an impression of life in the city at the time.

A hippocampus depicted on a Terra Sigillata drinking vessel is the museum’s emblem. The remains of the former Mithras temple can be visited alongside the museum exhibits; the Archaeological Trail also includes the excavated temple. The museum and trail highlight different aspects of the Roman past: the exhibits here, and the temple as an archaeological site there.

Michaelsberg: Chapel, Geology, and Views

St Michael’s Chapel on Michaelsberg is one of the oldest sacred buildings in Emmendingen district and is documented as early as the 10th century. Late Gothic murals came to light during interior restoration in 2008. The chapel served as the castle chapel for a later castle on the hill.

At the foot of Michaelsberg, loess walls reveal geological history spanning millions of years. From the viewpoint, the view stretches far across the surrounding region. The Riegeler Michaelsberg nature trail offers a way to explore the geological features as well as the cultural history. The chapel, geological history, and views thus offer different ways to experience this part of Riegel.

Local Life and Regional Food and Drink

The local theatre kumedi is part of the town’s cultural life. The former brewing history also remains visible: the Riegeler Lofts were built on the site of the former Riegel brewery, where home brewers produce Römerbräu. Riegel’s restaurants and inns offer hospitality all year round.

The summer offering includes more than 600 beer-garden seats and an ice-cream parlour known beyond the region. There are also places to enjoy hospitality and camping facilities used by cyclists and hikers, including the campsite at MĂĽllersee. The seasonal beer gardens and year-round dining offer different ways to experience local life.

Getting There and Regional Orientation

The Breisgau S-Bahn runs to Riegel-Ort from Freiburg or Breisach; the museum is about a seven-minute walk from the station. Riegel has two railway stations, with connections to Deutsche Bahn’s Rhine Valley Railway and the Kaiserstuhl Railway. Routes and stopping patterns may change, so check your connection before travelling. For drivers, the Riegel exit on the A5 is a useful reference point; also check current road conditions and access before setting off.

The wider destination of Emmendingen offers a broader regional perspective. Emmendingen district has 800 kilometres of hiking trails and walking routes, as well as 900 kilometres of cycling routes, including 250 kilometres of signposted routes. The district’s vineyards are part of the Kaiserstuhl and Breisgau wine-growing areas and cover around 2,300 hectares. Hochburg, one of Baden’s largest castle complexes, is also part of this regional picture; it was first mentioned in writing in 1161.

If you are planning a family trip, you can tailor your accommodation search to your interests: would you prefer a stay centred on Roman history and the museum, nature and views on Michaelsberg, or a broader mix of culture, cycling, and hiking in Emmendingen district? The experiences you are looking for can provide a useful starting point when choosing where to stay.
