Köngen combines Roman history and a landmark with recurring cultural events and a weekly market. During your stay, you can explore a range of attractions: historical evidence, a digital tour and, on Saturdays, the market.

Ulrich Bridge and Roman remains

Ulrich Bridge is a landmark of the municipality of Köngen and is closely associated with the history of Duke Ulrich of Württemberg. It achieved literary fame. Since 1975, Ulrich Bridge has been reserved for pedestrians and cyclists.

The Grinario fort in Köngen was built by the Romans between 90 and 95 AD and abandoned in 155. It was later used, among other things, to build a Roman bath. The park and museum at Römerpark Köngen were inaugurated in 1988. Taken together, these details tell the story of Roman use and a later cultural site in the municipality.

The Jupiter Giant Column at the entrance to Köngen is evidence of Roman settlement in the municipality during the first centuries AD. Its lowest, four-sided Four-Gods Stone depicts four different deities. The octagonal Stone of the Days of the Week bears a relief of Victoria, the goddess of victory; its other seven sides depict the seven gods of the week, beginning with Saturday. The forms and figures give the monument a complex visual programme.

Köngen Castle and St Peter and Paul’s Church also preserve art-historical details. The so-called Knights’ Hall in the castle is now of great art-historical significance. The furnishings of St Peter and Paul’s Church include tombstones belonging to the Thumb von Neuburg family and a Renaissance winged altar with Gothic carvings.

Culture and markets throughout the year

Since 1988, the Köngen Cultural Days have been held regularly at the Zehntscheuer. The programme includes cabaret, chamber music, theatre, music and talks. The events range from stage performances to musical and themed events. If you would like to include a cultural outing in your stay, check the dates of the individual events.

The Köngen weekly market takes place every Saturday in the pedestrian zone. Sellers and producers from the region gather there on Saturdays. Market hours are 08:00 to 12:00; from April to September, it starts at 07:00. Residents and visitors can buy items including fruit, vegetables, eggs and pasta. Also on offer are flowers, wickerware, brushes and wooden goods, haberdashery, handicraft supplies and leather goods; clothing is not sold. The range offered by individual sellers may vary. Check the local market hours before your visit.
