Bad Rappenau combines a distinctive saltworks history with extensive parks and the RappSoDie brine bath. Insights into the history of salt and bathing sit alongside a park landscape covering around 29 hectares, paths and technical reminders of brine extraction. If you are looking for accommodation, deciding what matters most to you can help with your planning: should history, getting active outdoors or a visit to the brine bath shape your stay?

Salt and Brine at the Museum and Saltworks Park

The museum at the “Forum Fränkischer Hof” cultural center opened in 1989 and offers an overview of the history of Bad Rappenau’s saltworks, bathing and town. Its permanent exhibition also covers the history of the saltworks and bathing, as well as the prehistory and early history of the Bad Rappenau area. Its historical scope therefore encompasses both early periods and the development of the saltworks and spa town.

For the 2008 State Garden Show, the Bad Rappenau Local History and Museum Association established a salt and brine museum in one of the historic drilling houses, complementing the municipal museum. At the southern end of the saltworks park, a group of buildings comprises historic drilling houses, a brine extraction tower and a treadmill. These installations recall brine extraction, which began in Bad Rappenau in 1822. One notable feature is the last remaining treadmill of the Rappenau saltworks: it was built in 1822 in connection with the drilling of the first brine well.

Parks, Paths and Guided Experiences

The saltworks park, spa park and castle park cover around 29 hectares in total and offer playgrounds, streams and peaceful spots to relax. The parks also include a graduation tower, an animal enclosure in Zeitwald, a lavender labyrinth, a barefoot path and a grove of springs. These well-maintained, varied gardens and parks make a great destination for the whole family. Walking, hiking and cycling paths invite you to explore Bad Rappenau and its surroundings.

If you enjoy exploring with a guide, options include museum and town tours on the theme of “Salt and Brine,” visits to a historic drilling house and tours of the large parks. The Arbeitsgemeinschaft Gästeführungen e.V. regularly offers public guided tours on behalf of the City of Bad Rappenau/Tourism. If you are planning a guided tour during your stay, it is best to check the latest dates in advance.

Guided adventure hikes and cycling tours into the surroundings above the Neckar Valley are also among the options. Numerous walking, hiking and cycling paths are available for exploring on your own. This means you can choose between a guided outing and paths for discovering the town and its surroundings at your own pace. If you are planning a particular tour, check the latest dates and routes in advance.

The Brine Bath as Another Activity

The RappSoDie brine bath has two differently designed indoor pools on two levels and a steam bath. It offers a different focus from the historical exhibitions or getting active in the parks. Check the brine bath’s current opening status before your visit.
