Brackenheim brings together winegrowing, historic buildings and trails through the countryside. It is Württemberg’s largest winegrowing community. Its eight districts are surrounded by vineyards, forests and meadows that invite you to linger. In the old town, lovingly restored half-timbered houses provide a historic touch. In Brackenheim, discoveries related to wine and hiking go hand in hand with local history and culture.

Wine Country and Trails on Zweifelberg

The Wander3Klang Brackenheim comprises three routes that run in and around Zweifelberg. Those interested in winegrowing will also find the nature and wine trail there, which provides information about wine and winegrowing. The routes offer different ways to plan your outing: you can focus your plans on hiking or put wine and winegrowing at the centre.

The Brackenheim–Cleebronn section of the Zabergäu Wine Trail also passes through Brackenheim, running from Heuchelberg to Stromberg. At the wine-tasting stand along this section, wines and regional specialities are offered on Sundays and public holidays. Opening days vary by season; check them before you travel. The Wander3Klang can be reached by regional bus from Heilbronn and Lauffen railway stations. As connections may change, check the latest travel details before setting out.

Old Town, Church Architecture and Castle Complex

The Protestant Johanniskirche stands in Brackenheim’s cemetery. It is a late Romanesque basilica with a High Gothic choir. The two architectural styles give the church a distinctive character. In the old town, the restored half-timbered houses contribute to Brackenheim’s historic atmosphere.

The castle complex is located in the district of Neipperg, on a spur of the Heuchelberg. It consists of two associated but structurally separate Hohenstaufen castles with two towers; romantic ruins remain of the complex. The local history museum in the district of Botenheimoffers another way to explore regional history. It is housed in a former town hall and school built in 1837. The museum displays workshops for saddlery, wagon-making, locksmithing and shoemaking, some of them fully furnished. The Theodor Heuss Museum also forms part of Brackenheim’s commemorations of Theodor Heuss.

Wine and Culture at the Castle

At WeinTreff am Schloss, visitors can sample a wide selection from the range offered by the cooperatives, cellars and wineries of the Weinkabinett. Just under a dozen Brackenheim winegrowing businesses jointly organise the event. The offering also includes the “Simone´s Kitchen” food truck, serving a changing selection of dishes to accompany the wine. These include Maultaschen, sausage salad and cubes of cheese; the menu may vary depending on the event date.

The cultural programme also brings events to the castle: Kulturforum Brackenheim holds around 20 events there each year in the Kulturbühne Kapelle. The programme includes concerts, cabaret and comedy, theatre and variety performances, as well as children’s events such as puppet theatre and children’s theatre. Since 1994, Kulturforum Brackenheim e. V. has used the former castle chapel as a variety theatre venue. Individual events and dates may change.

Brackenheim as a Base for Planning Your Trip

Think about which experiences interest you most, and make your choice accordingly. If you are planning hikes, the three Wander3Klang routes, the nature and wine trail and the section of the Zabergäu Wine Trail offer different ways to shape your itinerary.

In the wider Heilbronn destination, Heilbronn district offers around 1,000 kilometres of signposted circular day hikes in Kraichgau, Zabergäu, Weinsberger Tal and Schozach-Bottwartal. The Neckar Valley Cycle Route is also one of the cycling routes highlighted in the district. These regional options place Brackenheim within a broader travel context.
