Gundelsheim combines urban history with a landscape of vineyards. Horneck Castle stands high above the banks of the Neckar and offers a view of the old town. Michaelsberg adds a second highlight: it is a landmark visible from far away, set amid vineyards in a distinctive location. In Gundelsheim, views of the old town and vineyards come together with a variety of walks and cultural experiences.

Explore the old town and vineyards on foot

The Historic Trail takes you through Gundelsheim via 17 stops. The route starts at the information board on Schloßstraße. The number of stops gives the trail a clear structure and makes it a distinctive way to explore the town’s history. If you are planning where to begin, the board provides a clearly marked starting point.

Another walk leads from the historic old town through the “Himmelreich” vineyard area and up to Michaelsberg. The route connects the old town with a named vineyard area and the landmark visible from far away. Unlike the Historic Trail, its focus is less on a set number of stops and more on the walk through the vineyards up to the hill. Each route offers a different starting point for planning your day: a tour of Gundelsheim or a walk with Michaelsberg as your destination.

Horneck Castle and Gundelsheim’s culture

The Transylvanian Museum is located at Horneck Castle. The pilgrimage church “Our Lady of the Nut Tree” is another of Gundelsheim’s cultural sites; it is in Höchstberg, a district of the town. Gundelsheim therefore includes both the castle and a cultural site in one of its districts.

A guided tour along the Gundelsheim towpath explores the history of the Neckar River and brings it to life through stories and poems. The river is not only a feature of the landscape but also a subject of stories and poems. The wine culture walk through Gundelsheim offers a different focus: it includes a tasting of select wines and culinary delicacies. This gives you a chance to weigh up culture and food and wine experiences based on their specific themes, rather than treating both as the same kind of experience.

Plan your stay

Horneck Castle is about a nine-minute walk through the old town from Gundelsheim am Neckar railway station or from the Gundelsheim, Stadtmitte bus stop. Check current connections before travelling, as public transport services and routes can change.

When looking for accommodation, your personal interests can be a useful starting point: Are you especially interested in the Historic Trail and Horneck Castle, the vineyard area and Michaelsberg, or the themed guided tours and wine culture walk? These differences can help you plan your days and tailor your trip to Gundelsheim around the experiences that interest you.

Gundelsheim in the wider Heilbronn destination

If you are planning a trip beyond Gundelsheim, the wider Heilbronn destination offers more options for planning a longer tour. Heilbronn district has around 1,000 kilometres of signposted circular day routes in Kraichgau, Zabergäu, Weinsberger Tal and Schozach-Bottwartal. The Neckar Valley Cycle Route is also among the district’s featured cycling routes. These regional cycling and circular routes offer a different scale of trip planning from the trails through Gundelsheim and its vineyards.

In 2026, a family tour of the permanent exhibition is scheduled at the Roman Museum in GĂĽglingen, in the wider Heilbronn destination, at 3 p.m. on the third Sunday of every month. Check the dates before your trip.
