Wüstenrot is located in the heart of the Swabian-Franconian Forest Nature Park, between the Lauter Valley and Brettach Valley at an elevation of just under 500 metres. Forests, fields, meadows and lakes shape the landscape. Marked trails, remarkable trees and insights into local history give a stay here a variety of focal points.

Forest Trails and Impressive Wellingtonia Trees

Wellingtonia trees over a hundred years old grow in the forests of Wüstenrot and neighbouring Löwenstein. Particularly imposing giants stand at Wellingtonienplatz: they reach almost 45 metres in height and up to 165 centimetres in diameter, measured at a height of 1.5 metres. In the Löwenstein forestry district, they are among the tallest and thickest trees. Wüstenrot Circular Hiking Trail 3 starts at Wellingtonienplatz and leads through Wüstenrot.

The network of hiking trails comprises 13 marked circular routes, with hikes ranging from 1.5 to 3.5 hours. In total, more than 80 kilometres of marked circular trails run through Wüstenrot. The routes pass through shady forests and by fields, meadows and picturesque lakes. Depending on how much time you have planned, you can fit a shorter or longer hike into your day.

There is also a dedicated range of routes for Nordic walking: Wüstenrot has been a Nordic walking centre of the German Ski Association since June 2007. Twelve routes lead through Wüstenrot’s forest landscape and cover around 80 kilometres in total, with up to 300 metres of elevation gain. Parking is available at every starting point; the routes are signposted throughout and equipped with heart-rate monitoring stations.

Discover Nature and Compare Activities

The 2.6-kilometre Dachsi Nature Experience Trail circular route passes through meadows and forests and runs alongside the Dachsbach stream and Finsterroter See. In addition to its eleven stations, there are opportunities to observe nature around the lake: along the way, you can discover butterflies, dragonflies, bees and the underwater world, for example. The trail requires sure-footedness and sturdy footwear. Some sections are narrow and unpaved, making the trail unsuitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs.

Another nature-based activity is the Nature Adventure Camp. It invites residents of Wüstenrot as well as visitors from further afield to enjoy adventurous hours in the varied natural surroundings of the area. For those planning active pursuits, there is also the high ropes course: it is the first freestanding high ropes course in Baden-Württemberg and can only be booked in advance.

For a longer cycling tour, the 5-Districts Cycle Route starts and ends in Wüstenrot and connects five districts. Three long climbs make it a challenge even for experienced cyclists. The route mostly follows roads with little traffic, but occasionally uses busier roads as well. This gives it a different character from the hiking options, which range from 1.5 to 3.5 hours.

The bird of prey centre offers flying displays at 3 p.m. on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, and on weekdays by arrangement. Check the current conditions before your visit.

Local History and an Important Visitor Notice

The Bauspar Museum is dedicated to the life and work of Georg Kropp and the founding of the Wüstenrot building society. Documents on these subjects give the museum visit a tangible connection to local history. The Glass Museum presents a different collection, featuring valuable glassware and other objects from the early days of glass production. Both museums add a cultural dimension alongside the trails and nature-based activities.

A special place in the surrounding area is the Silberstollen, about 150 metres beyond the outskirts of Wüstenrot in the direction of Schmellenhof. It consists of the Unverhofftes Glück passage, 127.6 metres long, and the Soldatenglück passage, 34.85 metres long. The mine is not accessible due to falling rubble and to protect wildlife. The lengths of the two passages and the visitor notice go together here: they help put the site into context, but entering the mine is not possible.

Your planned priorities can help determine your choice of accommodation: Wüstenrot combines marked hiking trails and forest landscapes with cycling, nature observation and museums. If you plan to take part in various activities, be sure to check the conditions for individual offerings—for example, the advance booking requirement for the high ropes course and the current visitor conditions at the bird of prey centre.
