Discover Tengen: Gorge, Romans and History
Accommodation in Tengen
Tengen offers several distinct perspectives on nature and history: a circular trail through the Mühlbach Gorge, Roman excavations in Büßlingen, the town layout and events at Blumenfeld Castle. This lets you consciously choose the focus of your stay.
Gorge, panoramas and Hegau hiking trails
The circular trail through the Mühlbach Gorge uses bridges and boardwalks, passes waterfalls and returns to Tengen’s town layout. The Mühlbach’s highest waterfall is 13 metres tall—a specific feature of this water-shaped route.
The Blumenfeld Panorama Trail offers a different perspective: views towards Hohenstoffel and, in clear weather, the Alps. While bridges, boardwalks and waterfalls shape the route through the Mühlbach Gorge, here the focus is on the surrounding landscape. This lets you choose between a gorge walk with waterfalls and a trail with wide-open views.
The regional hiking context extends further: on the Hegau premium hiking trail network, the restored old towns of Tengen and Blumenfeld are places to pause. In the Hegau, premium hiking trails pass volcanic formations, castles and river landscapes near Lake Constance. This broader Hegau perspective brings together natural features and historic townscapes.
Roman traces and the town layout
Ten excavated stone buildings can be visited at the Roman villa estate in Büßlingen. The site is one of the largest excavated Roman villa complexes in southern Germany. The number of buildings gives the site a tangible scale; anyone interested in Roman history will find architectural traces here rather than just a place name.
Tengen’s town layout comprises two adjacent urban complexes. St. George’s Castle Chapel is next to another historic site within the complex. The layout of the town and the chapel’s neighbouring location are therefore two concrete aspects to explore. Unlike the Büßlingen villa estate, the focus here is not on excavated Roman buildings, but on the town layout and its historic setting.
Guided tours and culture in Blumenfeld
The guided activities also offer different points of reference. The guided historical tour of Tengen lasts around two hours. The guided e-bike tour is listed as approximately 30 kilometres with 550 metres of elevation gain. For planning your day, you can compare a town tour with a set duration to a tour described by distance and elevation gain. If you are mainly looking for culture, the town tour offers a different focus; the e-bike tour’s distance and ascent provide specific points of reference.
Blumenfeld Castle adds a cultural programme to the historic sites: it hosts concerts, exhibitions and readings in a historic setting. The castle is also the subject of a municipal revitalisation project. If you would like to plan your trip around a particular event, check in advance whether it is taking place on your dates.
