Schallbach lies at the mouth of the Kandertal, on the southwestern foothills of the Black Forest and in the wider Basel–Weil–Lörrach area. It is also situated in the trinational region between Germany, Switzerland and France. The landscape and local history give your stay a rural character; the Holzeck forest playground and nearby attractions add further points of interest. When looking for accommodation, you can consider whether Schallbach’s village history and Holzeck, or cultural and landscape attractions in Lörrach, should be the focus of your trip.

Landscape and village history

Schallbach lies in the Bamlach–Schallbach loess hill landscape, which is considered well suited to agriculture. As a typical clustered village, it developed around a farm and a chapel. Its rural village character has largely been preserved because no industry has settled here. The place name is first documented in 1240 in a damaged document associated with St. Blasien Abbey. This should be distinguished from the earliest written mention of a chapel in Schallbach, which dates to 1275.

Holzeck: Play and picnic area at the edge of the forest

The Holzeck forest playground is located at the edge of the forest. Its facilities include a slide, a seesaw bar, a basket swing and a wooden balancing element; there is also a shelter, picnic tables and a barbecue. The play equipment offers a variety of ways to get active, while the tables and shelter provide a dedicated area for a break. If you would like to use the barbecue, check the current rules for the site beforehand. Groups of more than 25 people must register in advance with the mayor’s office to use the playground. Before organising a group visit, also check the current municipal rules.

Bus and heritage railway

Bus route 55 runs through Schallbach along the Kandern–Weil am Rhein–Basel corridor. Check the current timetable before travelling. The Kandertalbahn is a separate service: this heritage railway runs for 13 kilometres from Haltingen to Kandern through the Kandertal. It is one of the few heritage railways in Germany and the only standard-gauge branch line in Baden-Württemberg operated exclusively as a heritage railway. If you plan to take a trip on the heritage railway, check its current operating days beforehand.

Culture and attractions

The Schallbach Cultural Days took place from 2016 to 2025. Dates may change for future editions; if you are interested, check the dates for each event. Attractions in the wider area include Rötteln Castle ruins in Lörrach, Bürgeln Palace in Schliengen and the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein. The selection ranges from castle ruins and a palace to a design museum.
