Markgröningen combines medieval half-timbered houses with a history that can be read in its buildings, churches and old streets. A signposted walking tour, paths around the town and the Schäferlauf offer different ways to discover the place. You can tailor your stay to your interests, whether you want to admire historic architecture, get outdoors or experience a living tradition.

Half-timbered houses and town history

Markgröningen’s oldest half-timbered house stands in Schlossgasse: building no. 8. Its street-facing section was built in 1347; the gabled extension on the east side was added around 1670. The building phases of a single house illustrate the long development of local half-timbered architecture. As a town with medieval half-timbered houses, Markgröningen is part of the German Half-Timbered House Road.

The present-day Church of St. Bartholomew also offers a window into the town’s history: it was built between 1255 and 1280 on the site of a Romanesque basilica dating from the 9th century. Its patron was Count Hartmann II of (Württemberg-)Grüningen. Another trace of the town’s early history is the water conduit that Peter von Koblenz built to the market fountain in 1499. It carried fresh water from a spring in the Oberer Leudelsbach district into the town. Remains of the town fortifications have been preserved in old houses and barns along Helenenstraße, Schillerstraße and Grabenstraße.

The Wimpelinhof Museum is accessible to wheelchair users. If you have specific accessibility requirements, we recommend checking on the exact situation before your visit. This can help you decide whether a visit to the museum suits your needs.

Walking tours, trails and traditions

A signposted walking tour starts at the market square and passes through the historic old town, with 30 stops along the way. It offers a practical way to discover the town as you go, rather than viewing individual buildings in isolation. For a more active focus, “Markgröningen bewegt” (“Markgröningen on the move”) offers four selected routes: along the stream, through meadows and forests, along the wine trail or through the town.

Around Markgröningen, the local branch of the Swabian Alb Association has marked out seven circular hiking routes, with a total length of 82 kilometers. Information boards show the routes, each between 8 and 16 kilometers long. The options let you choose different distances and time commitments; before setting out, it is worth checking the current signs and trail conditions.

The Schäferlauf includes a festival parade with more than 50 groups. Alongside the historic buildings and trails, it offers another facet of the town: the focus is not only on the built past, but also on a parade that is part of the tradition. Specific parade details may vary from one edition to the next.

Excursions in the wider Ludwigsburg destination

If you include the wider Ludwigsburg destination in your travel plans, you will find other attractions there, each with its own character. In the district of Ludwigsburg, terraced vineyards on steep slopes along the Neckar and Enz rivers shape the landscape; winegrowing has been a tradition here for centuries. The Wunnenstein Wine Experience Trail is about four kilometers long and links 60 illustrated information boards about viticulture and winemaking with viewpoints. Along the trail, you will also find restaurants, places to sit, barbecue areas and Wengertschützen huts.

The Celtic period is another regional highlight: the Celtic Trail connects nine significant archaeological finds along a route of about 35 kilometers through the district. The Keltenweg-AR app brings the sites to life with interactive VR and AR features. At the Hochdorf/Enz Celtic Museum, a faithfully reconstructed burial chamber of the Celtic prince offers a glimpse of the Early Celtic period; visitors can also learn about everyday life and crafts. These examples are part of the wider Ludwigsburg destination and should be distinguished from Markgröningen’s attractions.

Choosing the right area to stay in

Base your search on the places and activities you actually plan to visit. This makes your preferred location part of your travel decision, rather than relying only on a general idea of what “central” or “quiet” means.
