Oberstenfeld: Castle, Forest and Swimming Fun
Accommodation in Oberstenfeld
Oberstenfeld combines medieval history, hiking ideas and swimming fun. Lichtenberg Castle rises above the town, with views stretching across the Bottwartal valley. The municipality is considered the most heavily forested in the surrounding area and offers numerous hiking opportunities. Oberstenfeld is also home to the Oberes Bottwartal mineral swimming pool. This gives you a choice of different travel highlights: historic architecture, trails in nature and a day at the pool with play, sports and wellness facilities.
Lichtenberg Castle: the Hohenstaufen era and the Bottwartal valley
Lichtenberg Castle is one of the best-preserved castles from the Hohenstaufen era north of the Alps. It was first mentioned in a document in 1196 in connection with the Lords of Lichtenberg. The chapel beside the castle gate dates from around 1230. These two dates draw attention to different aspects: the written record of the castle and a specific architectural detail from the early 13th century. Together with the views across the Bottwartal valley, they bring architectural history and landscape into focus.
The castle is privately owned and is not generally open to the public. Check the current access arrangements before visiting. Guided tours take place on the first Sunday of each month; confirm dates and registration requirements in advance, as these may change. Private tours are also available in English for groups of twelve adults or more. Check the arrangements before booking.
Museum and Wein-Lese-Weg
The Magnetangler Museum Oberstenfeld displays original finds from local waters. It is scheduled to open on the first Sunday of each month from 1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., except in August, September, December and January. The schedule may change; check it before your visit. If you would rather plan a tour than visit a museum, the Wein-Lese-Weg Tour 4 runs between Oberstenfeld and Beilstein. This gives you a choice between a visit featuring local finds and a route between two towns as different ways to explore.
Hiking and recreation at the mineral swimming pool
Oberstenfeld is considered the most heavily forested municipality in the surrounding area and offers numerous hiking opportunities. Trails in nature provide a distinct focus alongside the history of the castle and museum.
The Oberes Bottwartal mineral swimming pool is located in Oberstenfeld. It has a 100-metre family slide and a children's adventure area with water-play features, slides and other play equipment. The wellness area includes bubble loungers, spray showers, massage jets and floor bubblers. There is also a beach volleyball court and eight trampoline areas. The outdoor pool brings together swimming, play, sports and wellness facilities, offering a different way to spend the day than hiking or visiting museums.
Choose accommodation to suit your travel plans
When looking for accommodation in Oberstenfeld, you can start by deciding what you want your stay to focus on. The castle and museum offer different ways to explore history; hiking opportunities add a nature and activity focus, while the mineral swimming pool brings together water, play, sports and wellness facilities. This makes it easy to plan whether culture, time in nature or swimming fun should take centre stage. If you plan to visit the castle and museum, take their respective access and opening conditions into account.
