Discover Archshofen: Viticulture and Jewish History
Accommodation in Archshofen
Archshofen combines a small, now greatly reduced area of vineyards with the history of its former Jewish community. Additional nature and cultural activities can be found in the wider Creglingen destination.
Viticulture in Transition
Vineyards once covered more than 30 hectares in Archshofen; today, just under one hectare remains. In winter, wine from the remaining vines is served in local Besenwirtschaften (traditional wine taverns). The marked contrast between the area’s former extent and its small remaining vineyard makes the changes to this tradition tangible. If you would like to include a Besenwirtschaft in your plans, check its opening days in advance.
A Stop Along the Cycle Route
The HoldermĂĽhle stands right on the border between Baden-WĂĽrttemberg and Bavaria, directly beside the Liebliches Taubertal cycle route. It is a popular stop for visitors, and cyclists and hikers can include it in their plans. Before visiting, check whether it is currently operating and what its opening hours are.
Jewish History in Archshofen and Creglingen
Archshofen is home to a former synagogue associated with the Jewish school and Jewish community. It is now used as a clubhouse. As its current use may change, it is advisable to ask locally before planning a visit specifically to the building.
At the Jewish Museum in Creglingen, the exhibition “Roots and Paths” documents the Jewish history of Creglingen and Archshofen from the beginning of the 17th century to 1939. The exhibition thus covers the history of both places over a clearly defined period.
Nature and Culture in the Wider Creglingen Destination
At the upper reservoir of the Münsterseen lakes, the Herrgottsbach flows directly into the lake. A fishing education trail, meadows, the stream and the forest invite visitors to relax and explore. The combination of water, meadows and woodland offers a different focus for an outing than Archshofen’s viticultural and local history.
The Mühlweg also leads to destinations in Creglingen: Information panels offer insights into the town’s history in past centuries. The route leads to the Herrgottskirche, about one kilometre outside Creglingen, and to the Thimble Museum.
The limited space is an important consideration when visiting the Lindleinturm: The tower is suitable only for small groups or groups with plenty of time. No more than six people can visit the tower at a time. This limit helps you plan a visit that suits your group size and available time.
In Creglingen, Reinhold Schneider grows medicinal and fragrant roses, and cultivates more than 100 wild rose varieties in his fields. He offers seminars and guided tours. City tours are also available in German and Russian, including a tour following in Riemenschneider’s footsteps. If you are interested in a tour or seminar, it is advisable to ask about dates and availability in advance.
