Ichenheim: Old Rhine, Nature and History
Accommodation in Ichenheim
A canoe launch on the Old Rhine, a nature reserve west of the town and memorial sites in the forest give visitors different reasons to come to Ichenheim. There is also church architecture, recurring fair dates and regional offerings related to farms and food. When planning your trip, it is worth sorting these highlights: water, nature watching, or culture and history lead to different ideas for a day out.
Water, cycling and scenery
There is a canoe launch on the Old Rhine at the anglers’ clubhouse in Ichenheim. Water conditions may affect whether it can be used; check them before setting off. A cycling tour can start at the Langenrothalle. There is ample parking there for visitors arriving by car. This offers two different options for an active day: a trip on the water or a bike ride starting at the hall.
The “Salmengrund – Altrheinarm W Ichenheim” nature reserve lies west of Ichenheim. An ecological survey from 2020 describes a broad, slow-flowing, gently meandering branch of the Old Rhine. The landscape includes shallow banks, extensive shallow-water areas, and strips of reeds and reed canary grass. A large population of yellow water-lilies is also part of this natural setting. These details give the landscape its own character, distinct from a trip on the water.
Churches and forest history
The Catholic parish church of St. Nicholas in Ichenheim brings together architectural history from several periods: construction of the new church began in 1819, retaining the core of the older Gothic tower, and the church was consecrated in 1963. The Marian chapel at the church offers a place for quiet and contemplation. Alongside the architectural history, visitors can therefore find a peaceful place for a reflective break and a distinct cultural highlight.
An information board in Täuferwald commemorates the history of the Protestant residents of Ottenweirer Hof. The forest can be reached by train, car, on foot or by bicycle; check local conditions before travelling. Another memorial site is in Ichenheim Forest: the memorial stone commemorates the Polish forced labourers Jozef Wojcik and Franciszek Strojewski, who were executed there in October 1942. A route description from 2004 directs visitors to leave their vehicle and walk into the forest along the “Unteren Fürthwaldweg,” which leads to the right. Check this guidance on site.
Fair and culinary events
Ichenheim has held a traditional fair each spring and autumn for almost 250 years. It is set up on Rheinstraße, between the Schwanen inn and Kreuzstraße. The Ichenheim Classics, including the South Baden Championships, were scheduled for June 18–21, 2026, with dressage and show-jumping competitions.
The annual Culinary Farm Shop Tour takes place in Altenheim, Dundenheim and Ichenheim. It includes 16 participating farms, which offer insights into their businesses and culinary delights. The 2026 event was scheduled for September 20; it was planned to start at 10 a.m. with a church service at HĂĽrsterhof. The fair and farm shop tour offer a different focus from nature and forest history, highlighting recurring traditions and regional agriculture.
More things to discover in Neuried
Neuried also offers additional destinations to consider when planning your trip. The 37.2-kilometre Bure cycling route passes through Neuried and offers insights into the cultivation and production of regional foods and agricultural products. The Auen wilderness trail near Altenheim can only be walked when there is no severe flooding. A coloured water-level gauge at the entrance shows the water level; check it before setting out on the trail.
In Schutterzell, St. Michael’s Church has been used as a shared church by the Protestant and Catholic denominations since 1804. The public sculpture trail in Neuried brings together existing sculptures and new works. Football golf is available in Dundenheim: players try to kick a football through obstacles and over changes in terrain into a hole in the ground, using as few shots as possible. According to the description, the activity suits different age groups and requires no special equipment or preparation; check whether it is available before visiting. When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore take into account the highlights that matter to you in Ichenheim and in the wider destination of Neuried.
