Rust combines major leisure attractions with places to learn, local history and trails through a nature reserve. Europa-Park is located in the municipality of Rust between the Black Forest and the Vosges. Rulantica is situated on the outskirts of Rust, close to Europa-Park and directly opposite the Krønasår Museum Hotel. Other attractions include the Climate Change Garden and the Rheinauen Nature Centre.

Europa-Park, Rulantica and seasonal outdoor areas

In the wider Ortenaukreis travel destination, Rulantica offers year-round water fun for the whole family. It features numerous indoor and outdoor water attractions, as well as the Hyggedal relaxation and sauna area. When planning your visit, it is also worth checking the individual outdoor areas: Svalgurok, Dynstrønd and Snorri Strand are open from May to September, weather permitting. This limitation makes the outdoor areas a distinct seasonal consideration alongside the year-round water attractions.

Europa-Park and Rulantica offer two different focal points for a stay in Rust. If you would like to include both in your travel plans, you can treat them as separate attractions and organise your stay accordingly. Their locations are clear: Rulantica is close to Europa-Park and opposite the Krønasår Museum Hotel. When choosing your destination, you can therefore consider whether water experiences, Europa-Park or a combination of the two will be the deciding factor.

Climate Change Garden and Nature Centre

The Climate Change Garden in Rust is a 1.8-hectare learning centre that provides information about weather and climate change. A prominent landmark within the grounds is the 18-metre-high Günter-Gorecky Tower, with its 86 steps. The tower’s name, height and number of steps make it a distinctive feature of the garden; the site also gives the subject of climate a tangible place in Rust.

The Rheinauen Nature Centre in Rust is an information, events and visitor centre. Together with the Climate Change Garden, it adds options focused on nature and learning. For families who want to combine different interests during their holiday, it offers another way to explore weather, climate and nature alongside the major leisure attractions.

Circular trails in Taubergießen

Rust is one of the municipalities within the Taubergießen nature reserve. Several signposted circular trails for cyclists and walkers run through the protected area. This offers routes for different ways of getting around, without any one route defining the character of the area. If you are choosing between visiting the leisure attractions and spending time outdoors, Taubergießen offers a clearly different focus: signposted circular routes through a nature reserve.

The regional context also helps put the area in perspective. Taubergießen lies within the wider Ortenaukreis travel destination; the nature reserve there covers 1,695 hectares and is one of the largest nature reserves in Baden-Württemberg. Ortenaukreis lies between the Rhine and the Black Forest. In total, it has 23 nature reserves covering around 3,110 hectares, stretching from the Rhine plain to the higher elevations of the Black Forest. These figures describe Ortenaukreis as a whole and complement the specific trails you can explore in Taubergießen.

Getting around Rust and local history

The Rust bus runs through the municipality daily from 08:00 to 22:30, except on 24 and 25 December, every 30 minutes. Its route includes twelve stops and connects Rust with Rulantica and Europa-Park. If you are planning your visits around specific times, check the current timetable before travelling.

The present-day Church of St Peter in Chains offers another glimpse of the town. It was built in the 18th century: the nave was inaugurated in 1728, and the church was consecrated in 1737. These two dates provide a specific chronological reference point for the town’s history. With its church, climate learning centre, nature centre, nature reserve and major leisure attractions, Rust offers a range of reasons that may influence your choice of accommodation.
