Lauchheim brings together a variety of landscapes within a small area: the young Jagst Valley, the Ellwangen Virngrund, the heathland hills on the edge of the Ries, the densely wooded Alb escarpment and the sparsely vegetated, rocky Härtsfeld. Elevations range from 480 to 730 m. Well-maintained hiking and cycling trails invite you to explore the area on foot or by bike. You will find a variety of ways to enjoy a stay combining nature and activity.

Explore Stettberg on foot

At the Stettberg nature and exercise trail, you can learn about the local flora and fauna. The trail begins at the fire pond near the municipal depot, follows LindenstraĂźe and FuchsmĂĽhlweg, and, after passing under the railway, crosses Wiedenfeld to FuchsmĂĽhle; from there, it continues to the SchĂĽtzenhaus. This route provides clear directions for exploring the trail.

Along the nature and exercise trail, there is a meadow with a barbecue area, a spot called “Take a Breather” and a small exercise equipment circuit. Alongside its focus on nature, the trail also features places to pause and opportunities for exercise. You can decide which of these appeals to you most by looking at the route and its stops.

Experience Kapfenburg Castle through play

The interactive Ukulele Trail is a circular route around Kapfenburg Castle that introduces children and families to the castle’s history through play. The stops focus on the castle’s history; their details may change. Since 1999, the castle has been home to the International Music School Academy, Kulturzentrum Schloss Kapfenburg. The castle thus brings together a family-friendly way to explore its history and a cultural institution.

Churches and town history

Today’s parish church of St. Peter and Paul was built in 1869 and 1870. The renovated church, in the Neo-Renaissance style, has unique interior furnishings and exceptional works of art. The St. Barbara Chapel, the oldest surviving building of the parish, was built around 1400 in the Gothic style. The cemetery chapel contains an elaborately designed altar from the Baroque period. Several buildings in the town centre still bear witness to Lauchheim’s former role as the administrative seat of the Kapfenburg Teutonic Order Commandery. Together, these sites offer different ways to explore history: through architectural styles, religious art and the town’s former administrative role.

Discover the Museum in the Gate Tower

The Museum in the Gate Tower in Lauchheim covers geology, prehistory and the Roman period, including two forts. Its exhibits reflect Lauchheim’s distinctive development as the area’s place of origin and as the centre of the Kapfenburg Teutonic Order Commandery. The museum’s broad range of topics therefore complements the town’s historic buildings with perspectives on natural history, prehistory and the Roman era. Outside opening hours, guided tours can be arranged by appointment, including in combination with a town tour.
