Sulz am Neckar: Hiking, Cycling and Culture
Accommodation in Sulz am Neckar
Hiking trails, cycling routes and cultural sites offer different ways to experience Sulz am Neckar. You can combine your trip with outdoor activities, art or local history and choose the focus that best suits your plans.
Hiking between Albeck and Glatt
Sulz am Neckar has a total of 48 signposted circular hiking trails, covering about 345 kilometres. These totals may change if the trail network is adjusted. A distinctive destination for a hike is Albeck Castle Ruins: the hike there has been certified by the German Hiking Association as a “Traumtour” (dream tour), a quality trail. Certifications may be renewed or changed; check the current status if it matters to your choice of route.
The hike to the ruins passes through the Albeck nature reserve and by juniper bushes. It offers views of the Neckar Valley and the Swabian Alb; the castle ruins themselves are located above the Neckar Valley. This means the route combines nature and scenery with a historic destination, without focusing solely on the ruins.
Cycling on two named routes
Sulz am Neckar is right on the Neckar Valley Cycle Route and the Heidelberg–Black Forest–Lake Constance Cycle Route. The town is a good starting point for cycling trips. If cycling is the main focus of your stay, the two routes provide a clear framework for planning. The range of hiking options offers a different focus, from signposted circular trails to individual routes with named starting points and destinations.
Museums and historic sites
The Bauernfeind Museum in the centre of Sulz am Neckar displays around 200 works, including 75 originals. It also documents the life of artist Gustav Bauernfeind through photographs, letters and documents. The collection and biographical materials offer different ways to explore his work and life.
In Glatt, local history goes hand in hand with hiking plans. The Castle Museum in the Glatt Castle Cultural and Museum Centre brings the history of the village and the Lordship of Glatt to life. Glatt Moated Castle is one of the best-preserved castle complexes in Baden-WĂĽrttemberg.
Two hiking trails also start at the moated castle: the Three Valleys Hiking Trail starts there and passes through the well-kept castle garden and by the mini-golf course. The Hohenzollern Hiking Trail starts at the west gate of the moated castle. Before setting off, it is worth checking the current route description, as route details and access may change.
In Fischingen, Wehrstein Castle Ruins are the remains of a former castle dating back to the 12th century. They add another perspective on the town’s earlier history to the historical themes of Sulz am Neckar.
Plan your stay around your interests
If you are planning with a range of interests in mind, first consider whether cycling, hiking, or culture and local history should be the main focus. The cycle routes, hikes around Albeck and Glatt, and the museums and historic sites offer a variety of themes to choose from.
