Discover Mainhardt: Roman history and nature experiences
Accommodation in Mainhardt
Roman remains, sensory stations in the forest, and signposted walking and cycling routes shape the discoveries Mainhardt has to offer. The Roman Museum introduces visitors to the period of Roman occupation; at the Fuxi Nature Experience Trail, listening and seeing take center stage. There are also museums and a fortified church in the outlying districts, an outdoor pool, and a rock cellar that also serves as a winter roost for bats. Your stay can therefore take you between history, nature, and active excursions.
Roman History and Culture in Mainhardt
The Mainhardt Roman Museum presents military, religious, cultural, and architectural evidence of the Roman occupation of Mainhardt from 150 to 260 AD. Guided tours may include the excavated and restored southwest corner of the fort, as well as guided tours along the Limes Trail. You can register for tours at Mainhardt Town Hall. This lets you complement your museum visit with insights into the remains of the fort or a guided tour along the Limes Trail.
The outlying districts also have their own cultural attractions. The Pahl Museum in Gailsbach displays works by Stuttgart artist Manfred Pahl and hosts changing special exhibitions and events each year. In Mainhardt-Bubenorbis, St. Margaret’s fortified church has a Wendelin altar. These offer different ways to engage with culture: art and changing exhibitions on the one hand, and a specific feature of the church’s interior on the other.
Hiking Trails and Nature Experiences
Mainhardt has 23 signposted hiking routes. The signposted routes in the Mainhardt area are between 5 and 13.4 kilometers long, taking you through secluded valleys, past streams and lakes, and through meadows and floodplains. A shorter option is the approximately 4.2-kilometer Moosbach loop, which follows paved, mostly level paths around Mainhardt. It was specially developed for people with limited mobility, families with strollers, and older people. Accessibility information was published when the route opened in 2025; check it again locally before setting out.
The Fuxi Nature Experience Trail is in Mönchsberg, an outlying district of Mainhardt. Its sensory stations include loungers for listening to the sounds of the forest, a viewing window into the underwater world of a pond, and an animal long-jump station. The trail is 10 kilometers long in total and can be hiked in two sections of 4.5 and 5.5 kilometers. When planning, you can choose between the two sections and the full route.
There is also a specific route for a longer bike ride: the 40-kilometer “Erlebnisradler” starts at the Mönchstraße hiking car park and passes through several districts and towns in the Mainhardt area. Named stops include Ammertsweiler, Gögelhof, Bubenorbis, and Wielandsweiler. Hiking and cycling differ here not only in the activity, but also in the published route lengths and starting points.
Rock Cellar, Herb Garden, and Outdoor Pool
The rock cellar in Mainhardt is a cellar hewn out of sandstone about 13 meters underground. It also serves nature conservation as a winter roost for bats. So far, greater mouse-eared bats, Natterer’s bats, and Daubenton’s bats have been found there. This site combines a striking underground structure with a specific nature conservation topic.
The Riegenhof Herb Garden at Riegenhof 4, 74535 Mainhardt, contains more than 100 plants; there is parking right in front. Another option for spending time outdoors is the Mainhardt Mineral Outdoor Pool: it is heated, and its sulfur-rich water comes from a mineral spring. Check the information about the facility again before your visit.
