Discover Michelbach an der Bilz through its trails, landscape and distinctive buildings. A circular hike up the Bilzhügel, a longer route to Einkorn and cycling loops each offer something different. The area also features forests, orchards and lakes, as well as traces of history ranging from church construction to viticulture documented as far back as 1311. Find inspiration for days when you want to make more or less room for exercise, nature and culture.

Hiking trails with different highlights

The 7.5-kilometre Bilzweg is a circular hike that starts and ends at a hiking car park in Michelbach. The trail climbs the Bilzhügel and offers panoramic views towards Uttenhofen and Westheim, as well as of Michelbach Castle, Schwäbisch Hall and the Waldenburg Hills. The Friedrich Carl Eggel Memorial is also on the route. This circular trail combines a high-level path, scenic views and a distinctive memorial site.

Another option is the route from Michelbach to Einkorn: it is 10.5 kilometres long and has 234 metres of elevation gain. Highlights along the way include a wildflower meadow, viewpoints and a foot bath. From a wooden tower, the view stretches towards Schwäbisch Hall, Comburg and the Welzheimer Forest. The distance and stated elevation gain make clear how this route differs from the shorter Bilzweg, but do not indicate a walking time. Trail conditions may vary.

Three circular hikes between 7 and 10 kilometres also explore the charming cultural landscape around Michelbach. Mixed and beech forests shape the scenery along the Schenkenbecher Trail, which also offers views towards the Waldenburg Hills and the Hohenlohe Plain. The route also reaches the Drei Linden natural monument, whose trees were planted in 1888. Here, forests, open views and a natural monument offer a different experience from the Bilzweg’s distinctive far-reaching vistas.

Cycling and experiencing nature

Six cycling loops start at the swimming pool car park in Michelbach an der Bilz. The landscape around Michelbach includes the partly protected Kochertal valley, orchards, extensive forests and lakes. It is also home to habitats for rare plants and animals. Cycling here is about more than just choosing a loop: it also offers a variety of landscapes to experience. Conditions on individual routes may change.

Recreation spots and their facilities

The Jakobsruhe viewpoint has a fire pit and a woodland playground. Local rules on use may apply. Gartennest offers a different combination of facilities: a shelter with sanitary facilities, a barbecue area, a playground and a sports field. Private events can be held there for a fee; check the terms of use on site in advance. The two recreation areas therefore differ both in their facilities and in the option to use Gartennest for an event.

Buildings and traces of history

Michelbach Castle was commissioned by the Schenken of Limpurg in autumn 1609 and was largely completed by around 1618. The Protestant St Martin’s Church is a Gothic building dating from the 15th century. The Romanesque tower of Michelbach Church is dated to around 1200; its features include round-arched friezes and coupled window arcades. These buildings represent different eras and give the townscape a historic dimension to discover alongside the scenery along the trails.

The history of viticulture is another local topic: it is documented in Michelbach as far back as 1311. Along with the buildings and natural monuments, this historical perspective broadens the range of things to explore beyond hiking and cycling. You can choose what to focus on during your stay by considering the specific differences: a circular trail or the route to Einkorn, woodland stretches or expansive views, a cycling loop or a stop at a recreation area.
