Weiler combines a long history as a castle hamlet with a distinctive viewpoint and a landscape shaped by orchards and Keuper geology. Weilerburg stands on the site of the former “Alt-Rotenburg,” on the western edge of the Rammert near Weiler. From there, the view extends across the Neckar Valley and the Gäu countryside. This gives you a clear picture for planning your trip: in Weiler, local history, views and the surrounding landscape sit side by side, while festivals and community life offer further cultural points of interest.

Weilerburg: history and views

Weiler is recorded as the former castle hamlet of “Rotenburg”; the village is first mentioned in 1244. Weilerburg is part of this history: in 1874, a 24-metre-high tower was built on the site of the former “Alt-Rotenburg.” Built as an observation tower on the castle ruins known as “Altrotenburg,” it is maintained by the German Alpine Club. Today, Weilerburg is a popular destination for excursions. Early records of the village, a 19th-century building history and its role as a viewpoint thus come together.

Orchards, Keuper geology and far-reaching views

From Weilerburg, the view extends across the Neckar Valley and the Gäu countryside, including the Upper Gäu and the Korngäu. In Weiler’s landscape, surrounding orchards mark the foot of the Keuper escarpment. Geologically, the village lies on rocks of the Grabfeld Formation, the gypsum Keuper. If you plan your stay around the landscape, you can take in two distinct perspectives: the far-reaching view from Weilerburg and the combination of orchards, escarpment and rock formations around the village. Gypsum Keuper refers to the rock; the Keuper escarpment describes the landform around Weiler.

Festivals and cultural points of interest

The Backküchenfest takes place in July and attracts thousands of visitors each year. The exact festival dates may change, so check the date for the relevant year before your trip. Refreshments are served at Weilerburg when the flag is flying. If you are planning to stop for refreshments, check before your visit whether the flag is flying.

The former Pumphäusle is a listed building and is used as a clubhouse by the Weiler 1960 e.V. Bird and Nature Conservation Association. A piston pump that is still operational has been preserved there. The Pumphäuslehockete is one of the association’s regular events, and nature walks are among its projects. The Catholic parish of St. Wolfgang Weiler includes St. Wolfgang Church and sculptures. These varied topics complement the story of the castle with community life, local history and religious culture.

Choose the right reason for your trip

A trip to the Backküchenfest depends on its date in the relevant year. For a landscape-focused stay, Weilerburg and its views across the Neckar Valley are the clear focal point.
