Fridingen an der Donau lies in the Danube Valley, also known as the “Swabian Grand Canyon.” The town is a member of the Upper Danube Nature Park. The river landscape, hiking trails and historic sites give your stay a variety of highlights—from a walk through the Danube Gorge valley to art and history in the old town.

The Danube Sinkhole and trails through the valley

One of the Danube’s main sink points is located in the valley near Fridingen, right on the Danube Cycle Path towards Ziegelhütte. A special information point focuses on the Danube sinkhole phenomenon. Across the wider destination of Tuttlingen, the phenomenon can take different forms between Immendingen, Möhringen, Tuttlingen and Fridingen: in some places the Danube carries a lot of water, in others it is completely dry, or it carries only a little water.

The landscape of the Danube Gorge valley offers numerous local circular hiking trails. One of the featured options is the certified DonauWelle Donaufelsen-Tour premium hiking trail. It was recertified as a premium hiking trail by the German Hiking Seal in July 2026. Cyclists also have a direct connection to the town: the Danube Cycle Path runs through Fridingen. Hiking and cycling are two different ways to include the landscape in your travel plans, without having to build your stay around a single tour.

Old town, artists’ house and museums

Fridingen’s historic town center is protected as a heritage site. The Künstlerhaus Scharf Eck, one of the town’s oldest burgher houses, stands in the heart of the old town. The year 1554 can be seen on its half-timbered gable. The upper floors house a museum dedicated to Hans Bucher (1929–2002), a painter of the Danube Valley. Across three floors, it offers insight into his life and work.

The Upper Danube Valley Museum is also housed in a historic building: it reopened in Ifflinger Castle in 1987; the local history museum had already been founded in 1974. In the museum’s ground floor, a display about the castles of the Upper Danube Valley is housed in the former castle chapel. The two museums have different focuses: Scharf Eck centers on Hans Bucher, while Ifflinger Castle explores, among other things, the castles of the Upper Danube Valley.

Another work of art can be found in St. Martinus parish church. Its Baroque high altar painting depicts the “Mass of St. Martin” and was painted by Matthäus Zehender in 1690. Together with the historic houses and museum exhibits, it offers another way to explore local art and cultural history.

Theater, traditions and winter activities

The Steintäle Nature Theater is a largely natural open-air theater set in a narrow rocky valley, with 400 seats. The Kulturring Fridingen stages an adult play and a children’s play there every year. The program thus includes two different plays for different age groups; specific performance dates should be planned separately.

The Fridingen Fasnet carnival is part of local tradition. It traditionally begins on the morning of “Schmotzige Duschdig” with the release of students from school and the carnival revelers taking over the town hall. Fasnetkiechle are also part of the tradition: the yeast dough is stretched over the knee.

In winter, the Antoni ski slope offers runs of varying difficulty. They can be reached by drag and platter lifts; a rope tow is added when ski lessons are in progress. Operations depend on conditions and the program. The ski lodge, run by volunteers, offers a place to stop for refreshments between or after runs; check before your visit whether it will be open at that time. When there is enough snow, a club also maintains a cross-country ski trail on Kirchberg.

Plan your stay and search for accommodation

Fridingen can be reached by the Ringzug, regional trains and various bus routes. Check the timetables when planning your specific journey. When choosing accommodation, consider which aspects of the town you’d like to focus on: the trails in the Danube Valley, the Danube Cycle Path, museums and the old town, or—depending on the season and conditions—the theater and winter sports. This lets you tailor your search to your travel interests without assuming that every activity is part of the same itinerary.
