Obernheim brings together chapels, religious traditions and hiking trails through the landscape of the Alb plateau. St. Wolfgang’s Chapel rises above the village on the Scheibenbühl; along the trails, you will also encounter viewpoints, orchards and Alb pastures. The village is part of the Upper Danube Nature Park, which covers around 1,492 km².

Chapels and Religious Traditions

St. Wolfgang’s Chapel stands on the 947 m-high Scheibenbühl, overlooking the surrounding village of Obernheim. A mountain service is held at the chapel every second Whit Monday, bringing together worshippers from the Balingen deanery.

The Pilgerhäusle, originally called “Bilgenhäusle”, was built around 1540, dedicated to the Virgin Mary and is considered Obernheim’s oldest chapel. Since 1873, the rosary has been prayed there every Friday; this tradition continues to this day. St. Afra Parish Church in Obernheim has a beautiful rectory garden.

Circular Trails with Different Character

Obernheim has six newly signposted circular hiking trails for different preferences and ability levels, including options for children and seniors. The circular trail to Heimbuch is an easy route of around 3.5 km, suitable for families, walkers and leisurely hikers. It starts at the car park by the sports facilities.

The “Via the Fohlenweg to the Schneckengarten” circular trail also starts at the car park by the sports grounds. It follows well-maintained forest and meadow paths through the varied landscape of the Alb plateau. At the Schneckengarten, you can enjoy views over Obernheim and of Scheibenbühl Chapel. The viewpoint is a good place to take a break or photos. Heimbuch and Fohlenweg therefore share the same starting point; the Heimbuch route is specifically described as short and easy, while the Fohlenweg focuses on the path through forests and meadows and the views.

BlĂĽtenweg, Nature Reserve and Valley Destination

The BlĂĽtenweg is an idyllic circular route around Obernheim, with scenic views and a rich variety of plants that is especially visible in spring and summer. Its varied landscape includes orchards, small patches of woodland and typical Alb pastures. If you choose the route according to the season, there is a specific difference to note: the variety of plants is especially visible in spring and summer.

The Rappenstein–Tanneck circular trail passes through striking natural and cultural landscapes, as well as the species-rich Stromelsberg/Hessenbühl nature reserve. Its flora and fauna are among the scenic highlights of the route. The Mountain and Valley Trail, by contrast, starts at the Catholic Church of St. Afra in Obernheim town centre. It follows the Blütenweg into the valley and continues to the picturesque Oberdigisheim Reservoir, a popular destination for excursions and a peaceful spot.

Obernheim also offers mountain bike routes through varied landscapes. This means there are further options for active days alongside the circular hiking trails.
