Allmannshofen brings together landscapes, sacred history and trails that invite you to explore in different ways. The surrounding countryside is predominantly agricultural and part of the Augsburg Western Forests Nature Park. The area also has the pilgrimage tradition surrounding St. Moritz, Holzen Monastery and a circular trail with religious landmarks. When planning your trip, you can choose from different themes rather than reducing the area to a single attraction.

Pilgrimage and Baroque Monastery Culture

For centuries, the St. Moritz hermitage on the northern edge of Allmannshofen was a pilgrimage destination. The reason was a wooden statue of Saint Maurice. The present-day Church of St. Moritz replaced the old chapel in 1710. These landmarks give the area’s history a religious focus, which can also be found in its hiking trails.

Holzen Monastery offers a different cultural highlight. The monastery church has a richly appointed Baroque interior and elaborate stucco work. The monastery, with its two towers, sits on high ground above the Schmutter and is visible from far across the Lech plain. Architecture and landscape come together here: the history of the complex is complemented by its striking position above the valley.

Circular Trail and Pilgrim Way

The Zeit-auf-dem-HOLZenerWEG is a 4.3-kilometre circular trail. Along the way, the Stations of the Cross lead to the St. Moritz hermitage; the route then follows the hillside through a sunken lane back to the village. The return route passes the Lourdes grotto, the monastery garden and the Loreto Chapel. The trail thus combines a manageable distance with several named landmarks and a variety of sections.

The Bavarian-Swabian Way of St. James is a separate route: one of its stages reaches the former Benedictine convent of Holzen near Allmannshofen via Mertingen. When comparing tours, you can use the stated distances as a guide: the Allmannshofen circular trail is 4.3 kilometres long; another circular trail in the wider Augsburg destination, the LandArt Bonstetten Art Trail, is 5.65 kilometres long.

More Trail Themes in the Augsburg Destination

The wider Augsburg destination has independent activities with different focuses. On the LandArt Bonstetten Art Trail, the artist Hama Lohrmann personally explains his sculptures. The three-kilometre meditation trail runs from the Oberschönenfeld Cistercian Abbey to the Weiherhof, along the edge of the forest in the Schwarzachtal valley. The district of Augsburg also has a well-developed network of cycling paths. These tours describe options in the wider Augsburg destination, not additional stops on the Allmannshofen circular trail.

Village Centre, Market and Accommodation

For a different kind of activity, the Kneipp facility is in the village centre, opposite the Kirchberghalle. It offers water treading and a classic arm bath for all age groups. The Johannimarkt in Holzen adds another local tradition: it has a long history, and since 1856 its organisation has been in the hands of the municipality of Allmannshofen. So, alongside trails and churches, there is also a market and an activity in the village centre to consider when planning different days of your holiday.

The Holzen Monastery complex also houses a restaurant and hotel, among other facilities; operational details may change. If you are considering staying here on your trip, check current availability before booking.
